Go on, we all know we got it on our home made arcades!!

And it is a perfect example of a game getting cut off at the top and bottom.

So would love to see this as a benchmark to see exactly how many people have built a good home arcade and how many people have to make do with imperfect ones like mine that has bits cut here and there!!!

Maybe get some feedback of who has built the killer machine :applaud:

What do you mean by 'cut off at the top and bottom'?  What resolution are you running it at?  Should be something like 352x256, assuming you are using an arcade monitor.

It's a vertical game...that means you got to turn your monitor vertical

Ahofle, Damn, why do y ou make it sooo easy  :notworthy:

I have used AVRES, I have used Mamewah resolution tool and everytime Bombjack came out at 392 x something.

Typing in your numbers, it worked 100% perfectly.

Now why on earth aren't the resolution tools doing it correctly  :banghead:

Now that Bombjack is perfect, I guess I have to play each game like 1941 and go in and manually put them at 352x256 (all my vertical games are screwed up basically as the tools dont fix them :badmood:

If you got any ideas, as Mamewah is not around and his instructions dont seem to make sense, you got a few beers on my next time you are in London!!

hmmmm, now that I mounted the PC into the cabinet and connected it to the arcade monitor, when I launch any game I did not touch, all works, the moment I launch Bombjack where I manually modified the settings as has been described here, it all goes out of sync and all the other games that I now launch go out of sync till I perform a reboot.

So my bombjack quest is still a mystery!!

any ideas anyone

Is this an arcade monitor then?  It's possible you may just need to let it warm up for some resolutions.  My previous, older arcade monitor would roll vertically on 256 line games until a few minutes after warm up -- then it worked fine.  Also, never adjust the vertical hold settings until the monitor is fully warm.

It is actually a New Hantarex Polo Arcade Monitor (new as in recently purchased from them, as they no longer manufactur them).

I will give that a shot tonight, maybe run it on a horizontal game for a bit, so it warms up then try bombjack again and if it does seem to be out of sync, wait a bit.

Was just worried I would blow it like I did my original 80's monitor, mind you, that was ancient.

Still, wierd that horizontal games woudl be out of sync after launching Bombjack!

Just for reference for future users, asked Andy (Ultimarc) about this problem seeing as I use his ArcadeVGA cards and within a few hours (he is fast everytime :-) ) he responded as follows which absolutely sorted out the problem:

Sab,

If the lines are horizontal or diagonal its the H Hold you need to adjust. It would be necessary to adjust the horizontal and vertical hold controls in almost every case of connecting an arcade monitor to an ArcadeVGA card. There will be a position of both controls which should work with all resolutions.

Andy

So all I need to figure out now is why doesnt mamewah's resolution tool not create correct settings in Vertical games.

Dunno, but nearly everygame is perfect with the above settings, the setup instructions for using avres with the arcadevga should really be updated with screen shots etc

Just bought a new polo 21" from them myself, waiting on shipping, think it got shipped thursday

Cant honestly remember its been that long since I edited it.
check it against the standard

I know you will have to manually edit the vertical game ini's and adjust resolution or turn on hwstretch in the ini files for them

and the mk , r type and nba jam games need resolutions adjusted too :banghead:

## mk ##

screen0 \\.\DISPLAY1
switchres 1
hwstretch 0
bezel 0
backdrop 0
resolution 401x256
resolution0 401x256@0

## nbajam ##

screen0 \\.\DISPLAY1
switchres 1
hwstretch 0
bezel 0
backdrop 0
resolution 401x256
resolution0 401x256@0

etc

Rampage should be set to 640x480.  R-Type shows as 384x256, so pick whatever is closest to that (like 401x256).

I thought I had this pretty much nailed but having just checked I agree there are quite a few game resolutions with 256 lines which do not come out very well. One thing which may help with some games is to set 'Match Resolution Within' to 8 Pixels.

Also note you can alter settings for all games with a certain resolution at once, by double-cliking the game and using 'Apply these settings to > All games with this native video mode & orientation'.

I will see if I can improve the auto selection when I get chance...

I don't know about a tutorial but there is a short how-to and an explanation of the options in the included readme...I don't know if you have seen this already, but I will assume you have and it is inadequate documentation as usual ;)

Cheers mate iv been on that web site any typed in the exact resolutions but they seem not to be correct it might be because at the moment im set up to my apple monitor and not my arcade monitor? not sure thoough as the other game resolutions i have been give seem to fit the screen perfectly. Will I have to alter them slightly? rampage world tour is

resolution 399x253
resolution0 399x253@0

and this is all ver the place

You can't specify a resolution like 399x253 unless you have it available in windows (use a tool like quickres to see your available res list).
The general rule of thumb that I use to pick a resolution is this:

1) From your list of available resolutions, pick those with exactly as many horizontal lines (the 2nd number) as the target res, or slightly more
2) Of those, pick one with exactly as many vertical lines (the first number) as the target res, or slightly more.

For your Rampage example, 399x253, the closest resolutions available would be the 256 horizontal line ones.  Of those, the closest would be 401x256.

I also try to avoid 'squareish' resolutions like 256x240, 240x240, 256x256, etc as those never seem to display games correctly (I actually removed those using Soft15khz).  MAME will almost always choose those square resolutions on 'auto'.

I've been struggling with this as well.  I keep jumping back and forth from AVRES and the Res-tool by Minwah.  I eventually stuck with the Res-tool, as it allowed me to select a group of games in a particular resolution and apply a new one to that group only.  It's tedious, but not as tedious as doing each game manually.

I still have some here or there that still aren't proper, but what I do is write them down as I see them and then fix them at a later date.  My FE (Maximus Arcade) has a screensaver feature that will execute a random game every 4 minutes when it's not in use.  That helps me find a ton of bad games (that are set wrong).

Anyway, it would be GREAT if there was a Wiki started that had the EXACT resolution that a game needed to be set to for the AVGA card.  Or perhaps MAWS could have this feature added?

If some has done it and got all the resolutions spot on could they host the ini's or make them available for download in a winrar package? so that we can download and extract into our mame ini folder?
