Artifact tribute - upright conversion
« on: July 13, 2010, 01:01:50 pm »
Well after postponing my 'rough and ready' bartop, I have received my 2 UK Jamma cabinets this afternoon.

They are a little beaten up, but no warping or water damage thankfully.

Im just starting to scrub them down and checking all the joints and fixtures.

Both cabs have Jamma wiring, psu's, coin validaters, lights etc - I wont be needing any of this - are they worth anything or should I just throw the wiring?

I was a bit disapointed when they arrived as the seller told me the monitor (I was expecting one) was busted so they didnt bother bringing it, I got my own back by having them help me carry them up a flight of stairs and round an awkward corner hahaha.  I paid £45 for both cabs delivered

Well here they are

Does anyone have any pics of a similar cab that has been refurbed, to get some ideas of whats possible with this type of cab?

1 Cab all cleaned up, Shocking how much crap gets inside these things

Found a one pound coin ;)

A set of keys

and lots of coin sized washers!

Stripped out all the jamma wiring, lubricated locks and catches

And am now stripping the final piece - the control panel

Got the IL/cherry buttons out fine

But im having problems getting the top plexi off, its secured with these:

What are the drivers called for these screws?

Unrelated:

With the control panel removed - you can the runners on the inside of the cab that the board slides into
2nd pic, control panel inserted - Why on earth would this panel have to be so deep?  The CP is held in place with the latches towards the front of the cab, I dont understand the design of this, can anyone shed any light on it for me?

Thanks

Thanks, lots of variations on this cab ;)

Did a little work today, cleaned up the marquee holders and kickplates

That drill attachment makes short work of the rust, came up like new!

Ill try and get them primed later on

EDIT: No priming done today, damn weather!

So, I did a dry fit instead - everything works ;) (the monitor is a temp 17", im picking up a 19" tomorrow, getting a 24" tv on friday and a 22" monitor on sunday - one of them will be perfect!)

Just found this one on ebay, really like the art and colour scheme - the brass kick plate is a nice touch although the black t moulding doesnt seem to accent the cabs design, something lighter would work better I think

the price is a little scary!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOYAGER-ARCADE-MACHINE-FIGHTER-EDITION-300-GAMES-/390148489404?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Video_Games_Coin_Operated_MJ&hash=item5ad6a980bc#ht_5720wt_1045

I might try for a theme like that ;)

Had a chance to work on the cab

Decased and mounted Dell 19" VGA crt, looks great, screen feels huge this close to it - will take a bit of getting used to!
Screen rotates great

Installed prototype control panel (will be 2 player in final), having a couple of issues with the awkward angles of the cuts where the panel meets the glass, and where the panel meets the front panel - I think I've sussed it out, Ill try modding it tomorrow.

Also need to get flush mounts for the ls-32's

Looks great dude, 19 inch screens fit really well in these smaller cabs.

Is that silver T molding or is it some type of metal strip?

Hi, yeah its plastic T moulding, but its very rigid and still pretty reflective - shame its damaged in some areas or I would have kept it

I used the jigsaw to shave off the face of the dell monitor, and have filled the dell logo and button holes
I will be sanding it and fine filling it again today - to be sprayed later

Its secured to the monitor glass with very strong velcro

Which im also using to secure to PC components to the cab, ideal for quick removal but secure fixing

Little update with latest progress

2 player control panel, I moved the fire buttons as far up the panel as possible to give a little palm room under the buttons.
Player 2 controls might need to move left an inch or so, its a bit awkward reaching the far right buttons, but the space between player 1 and 2 feels good - no hand bumping

4 admin buttons, hidden from view under the CP, also the front facing buttons are: red = coin / white = start

Coin doors, stripped and resprayed - need a light sanding, one more coat then clear coat

Top door will hide an admin panel
4 x lockout switches for admin buttons (so it will stay in single game mode)
volume control
power button
marquee light power toggle
footwell light power toggle
network socket
4 x usb sockets

bottom door conceals the subwoofer

2x 12" cold cathodes, + backs of speakers

de-shelled satellite speakers - I need to counter sink the mounts so they are flush and protect the speakers with some mesh or something

Player 1 controls fully wired to a DB25 (thanks for the sockets Franco!), currently going into a PS1 project box then USB adapter to the PC, this will offer me maximum compatibility with other systems.  If I keep the VGA monitor in there I can use my Dreamcast and 360, I might try and find a decent multisync monitor or even a TV, not sure yet.

I have also commissioned GuyDanger, from the forums, to interpret the Street Fighter cabinet art pictured above, can't wait!

see his work here http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=96410.0

Bah! I'm going mad. I can't find Franco's cab. This may be the same as Level 42's cab also?

Ha ha! You are not going mad, I do have that one that you linked to below :)

I didn't do a PA as I haven't really intended or done much work to it. The old monitor was fubar so I put a 29" 15khz monitor in and some Jap buttons/joys but thats it. I'm just using it as a cab to play my Jamma/MVS PCBs on whilst I'm working on my main Naomi project.

Currently waiting in for Mr Courier to deliver Bucky O Hare   ;D

Its looking good Jimmy. Nice to see some Jap controls ;)

If I was you I would be tempted to move P1 joystick over to the left and increase the spacing slightly between each players joystick and buttons.

Thanks Franco, yeah I will look into the controller spacing this week sometime

get it finalised

Quick in progress shot of some vinyl applied, t moulding gone, coin door partly stripped etc..

Dont worry about the missing strip at the back, thats for something else ;)

Well, Im really still not sure about the green!

I bought the roll of vinyl off ebay for like £8 delivered, I wanted some experience applying it without too much financial risk.

It might fit in with a possible theme, I had a friend round playing some Street Fighter Alpha 3 on the cab (player 2 - me, using a usb stick) me friend beat me pretty bad using honda - I called him a button masher

He responded by calling me a Mutton Basher!

marquee = <large wooden mallet> Mutton Basher! <Goggle eyed sheep>

Lol, I might just do it!

Not updated for a while as I haven't had that much time to work on the cabs.

Very much a WIP update with lots of things started but not complete, but here it is atm

Trying to show the cold cathodes in the footwells, hard to capture with my crappy camera

I will do a more comprehensive update when its complete, this is only cab 1 of 2!

Thanks guys!

But why is the marquee upside down?  ;D Looks great anyway.  :applaud:

Well I have some new plexi cut to size in the retainer, but havent finished the design yet - so without something there its pretty bright and distracting.
So I wedged the old one in there, it has a piece of weatherstrip running down the bottom edge - to fit in the retainer it needs to be upside down!
