Oh, the irony of milk. We consider breast milk nasty, yet our babies live off of it. We consider breast milk that comes from a clean outlet nasty, but milk from a nasty dirty cow teat that has to be pasteurized is oh so yummy.

It would still have to be pasteurized and homogenized... the risk of bacterial and viral transmission may actually be higher with breast milk than with cow milk given that we can no longer count on crossing species as ruling out a lot of potential problems.  I mean whoever heard of a cow with an STD or a drug addiction?

I tasted my wife's breast milk a few times while my daughter was breast feeding.  I suppose it is warm, but I hope you're not under the impression that cow's milk comes out if the teet refrigerated, LOL.

Anyway, the Ben and Jerry's thing wouldn't work.  It's illegal to sell your breast milk in the U.S.  It can be donated to milk banks, though somehow I doubt Ben and Jerry's will have much luck procuring millions of gallons of donated (or even purchased, for that matter) breast milk.

Some milk banks pay their donors. Most non-profit ones at least hook the women up with a high-end medical grade pump and all the supplies. When our first son died, my wife donated all her stored milk to a milk bank in Columbus. She once even looked into selling/donating, but she didn't pump very well at all.

Hmm . . . I didn't do any homework at all.  A worker in the hospital told us that the FDA allowed donation, but not the sale of breast milk.  Our kid was born in Utah, FWIW.  It was just in conversation.  We were neither in need of buying breast milk, nor considering selling it.

If I become motivated I might actually do some homework on it, but I'm not really very curious about it.  For now I'll just assume you're right, and shift my argument from it being illegal to it being difficult logistically and economically.  It would take quite a number of women to generate millions of gallons of breast milk.     I bet you'd have to pay them more than we pay our cows.
