new project started

I am a member that has been hiding in the bushes and just trying to learn the ropes. I have decided to start my first cabinet and things are going pretty good so far. This cabinet is based on a cabinet Knievel has designed and built called "The Woody". I have to give credit where credit is due and much credit goes to Knievel for the design and execution in his projects. I am trying not to butcher the design, just trying to do something similar because the design fits with the style in the room the cabinet will be in.

The cabinet itself will be built from Cherry I have had left over from a cabinet project I had in the past. The follow is what I started with. This 3/4" Cherry Plywood that is furniture grade, really nice stuff.

The next pictures show me getting ready to start cutting to size. Here shows my Fesstool plunge cut saw that really works wonders when you need to size a 4x8 sheet of plywood.

Here shows the first panel cut to size.

The next picture shows the 2nd panel. The second panel is rough cut with a jigsaw and I will use the first panel as a guide for my router with a flush cut bit. I done this because I wanted the side to be a perfect mirror image.

The next pictures show the areas I am going to make a rabbit cut in the back so I can hide the back piece of ply. The first picture shows the rough area to be removed, the second is the actual bit I am going to use and the third is the router table set up ready for the cut.

Here shows the two side panels cut,rabbited and ready to start the construction process. I had to stop here because I need to get some hardware before I can go much further. I should be getting everything I need over the next few days so I will try and get things updated as they happen.

Wow - great start - I love the workshop too.  How much is a sheet of cherry ply?  It's got to be expensive!

Great work room.  Sure is going to make your life easy with all the right tools.  BTW lovin the cherry wood.  It is going to look great all stained up.

Thanks for the comments on the shop. I have enjoyed woodworking for years and have been able to collect the tools I have needed over the years. The Cherry ply usually goes for around $75 a sheet in my area. I havent had to buy any in some time so I am not sure what the exact cost is at this time.

Rabbit cut:
So that is what that kind of cut is called.
I recently made a juke box, where I cut a 2 X 4 like that to use as a base. The juke set down inside the cut in the 2 X4s.
I used my table saw and had to make two cuts on each board. I called them "L shaped cuts", now I know the real term to use.

looks like a great job you got started. I like that cherry ply too, but it may be a little too expensive for me, except maybe for a small bartop or juke?

I got up this morning ready to work on my cabinet today so I thought I would share what I got done today.

The following pictures show the cabinet in the process of being assembled. I have assembled it with glue and brads. All the fasteners are used in a nature that they will not be seen when the project is finished, I didnt want to have to fill any nail holes on the outside.

8. shows the panel I drilled for the speakers.

12. this picture is looking at the underside if the drawer. I used pocket screws to attach the drawer front so no nails or screws can be seen unless you get down and look up at the bottom of the drawer when it is opened.

13. is looking at the door getting drilled for the concealed hinges.

15. is showing the monitor installed. The monitor is an acer LCD.

16. this picture is kinda tricky to see what is going on. the picture was taken from inside the cabinet looking at the back of the monitor. I wanted to try and show how it is mounted and the only way to see this is from the back.


Tomorrow, I am going to be working on the control panel.

I just quit work on my cabinet for the day and the following pictures show what all I have done today.
