making a VGA Break out cable...
« on: August 18, 2008, 09:22:38 am »
cant seem to find a good FAQ, nothing on the WIKI I could find either.

Im gonna go from a Nvidia based card to a Wells Gardner 739127K chassis and use Soft 15Kz

Any help/FAQs/Walkthroughs out there? I also read that the  POST/BIOS screens might damage the arcade monitor, should I be worried?

See Connecting an arcade monitor to a VGA card. on Ultimarc's website for the pinouts needed to connect the video card to the monitor.

I got the pinouts for my monitor from the manual.   I have a WG 25k7191, and these are the pinouts on MY MONITOR. You NEED to make sure about the pinouts on your monitor before hooking anything up. Also, pins 13 and 14 (h and v sync) get combined on my monitor and attached to the -Hor sync.

P1
  Red
  Green
  Blue
  Ground
  +Vert Sync
  +Hor Sync
  Ground
  -Vert Sync
  -Hor Sync
P2

There is discussion about feeding the monitor incorrect signals in the LONG Soft-15kHz thread. What I understand is that theoretically it could harm the monitor, and it may shorten its life, but no one has experienced a short-term failure due to this. I have sent the bios screen to the monitor, and saw two images. I wait until after windows starts up to power up the screen.

my only other question is... how do I power the monitor from the PC power supply? it has an isolation transformer. I love feeling like anewb, but Ive only ever used PC monitors in my MAME cab before.

PC power supply only has 5/12 VDC. Your Arcade monitor needs 120VAC. So you need Plug it in the wall outlet. Just like your Computer.

The monitor in my candy is two-prong, but it connects to an arcade PS - so, to be safe, I'd ground it.

the chassis will be grounded, just not through the power cord.  The problem is its wired for Neo Geo not Jamma so instead of dealing with that headache Im just gonna use soft 15 and an Ipac instead of a JPAC

i think ive done pretty much the same as you - i converted a mk2 cab to mame.  your monitor should plug into the wall and a breakout cable was pretty simple once you get the hang of it.
check out my other threads. i think they will be helpful.

got the cable from thenasty, spliced it in; I had the same pin outs as scotthh everything runs fine except the MKs, the resolution is odd. the monitor looked hardcore awesome with the Neo Geo board installed but looked like crap with the PC hooked up; I ended up having to adjust pretty much every single pot on the back then fine tune withthe monitor breakout board and windows settings.

thanks everyone for all the help.

Well, a special modeline for that game might've been better.

I slected what I thought would be a good resolution for that game but it doesnt look right and flickers kinda bad.  Ive read that using  the arcadeVGA app helps but Im trying to get MALA up and running right again with a limited set of roms (just the MKs and a couple SF games) Im also going through the Soft15 thread ( i think 23 pages needs to be cleaned up lol) and see what I can figure out from it

There should be no flicker for MK. It runs at 15khz - its refresh is different is all - between 52 and 53 hz.
