Burger King employee bathing in sink yuck.
« on: August 12, 2008, 02:29:21 pm »

XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) - Some workers at a Greene County restaurant are in hot water with the health department, after an employee took a bubble bath in a store sink.

It happened at the Burger King on Orange Street in Xenia.

A four-minute video posted on MySpace captured the employee, self-described as Mr. Unstable, bathing nude in a large stainless steel sink as several other employees and a store manager looked on.

The video began making its rounds on the Internet Monday morning. One of the recipients was Greene County Health Commissioner, Mark McDonnell.

"My first thought was oh my god," said McDonnell.

McDonnell immediately sent staff to restaurant to investigate the numerous health code violations.

He said the restaurant was aware of the incident and had already taken steps to clean up, including disposing of all the utensils and sanitizing the sink twice.
All of the employees involved were fired.
"You can't account for everyone's stupid actions but when things do happen if you respond to it and take the appropriate action that's reassuring," McDonnell said.

Some Burger King patrons don't agree.

"That's just, it's wrong it's a place where families come to eat and them taking a bath in the sink that's just not work ethic," said Crystal Dodge, who said she used to eat at Burger King all the time.

2News reporter Megan O'Rourke went to the Xenia Burger King Monday afternoon looking for comment, but was met at the door by an employee who asked her to leave and referred comment to Burger King's corporate office.

Burger King spokesperson Denise Wilson emailed the following statement to 2News Monday afternoon:

"Burger King Corp. was just notified of this incident and is cooperating fully with the health department. We have sanitized the sink and have disposed of all other kitchen tools and utensils that were used during the incident.

We have also taken appropriate corrective action on the employees that were involved in this video. Additionally, the remaining staff at this restaurant is being retrained in health and sanitation procedures."

But for diners like Crystal, it may be too little, too late.

"That's just disgusting. I wouldn't want to eat here after I heard something like that, that's just not appropriate for employment," Dodge said.

"This kind of stunt really is a black eye for the restaurant itself."

Health Department officials plan to talk with prosecutors to see if any criminal charges will be filed, but they don't have any plans to issue fines at this time.

I had a Carls Jr employee on a smoke break standing at the drive-thru window blowing smoke in my car. When I asked the girl at the window if I could speak to a manager, she said "I am the manager" (Chappelle's Show, anyone?) and when I complained, she blew it off.

I emailed the company and they fired the smoker. They also dealt with the supposed manager, but that's all they said..."She has been dealt with". They sent me coupons for free food, and I gave them away.

I haven't eaten there ever since.

I pulled into a Taco Bell parking lot once to see a cook taking a smoke break by the entrance. He then scrapped out his cig, and walked back in - all while wearing his gloves. We pulled right back out.

Worked in food services all through my teens and college... this is pretty small potatoes.  I worked at a bakery in high school doing overnight baking where the other baker used to have sex with his girlfriend right on the baker's table every night.  She'd leave and he'd go right back to flattening pastry doughs right on the same spot without cleaning a thing.

I'd have to say that's right up there with some of the dumbest things I've seen. I haven't encountered anyone having sex, though I wouldn't doubt it at all since one place I worked at, none of the females wore underwear.

I helped run a restaurant for about five years (a big mistake really) and the horror stories got worse with each passing year. At one point the chain attempted to get me to become an inspector of sorts. Yuck.

When visiting one restaurant, trash was a big issue. The place was just too small to really have proper trash receptacles. The dining area garbage can was just outside the doors. The kitchen on the other hand had the garbage in the bottom of the refrigeration units. A cardboard box was fitted in the bottom, then lined with plastic. No one wanted to take the garbage out so employees would quickly throw open the door, toss in whatever garbage from the kitchen then shut the door just as quickly. Yes, the top 3/4 or 1/2 of the fridge would indeed hold food. To get the food out, employees would reverse the quickly/open/close strategy.

Another restaurant would keep a soup kettle "hot" during busy hours by putting a soup pot in a sterilizer and running it for a couple of cycles.

Another would process meat in the "basement" and send the sliced meat up a dumb waiter. The process itself wasn't a problem at all if it wasn't for the fact that this "basement" was actually a storage area and a garage incomplete with a dirt floor in the summer months. Visualize handling raw and cooked meat and washing the dishes in the same sink used to wash greasy snowcat parts. How or why this place got an operating permit at all still puzzles me.

I walked into a pizza place and the employees there had locked another employee in a small fridge with a glass front (the kind that holds soda bottles). This was in full view of all the customers. The same restaraunt also allowed another employee to bring in their poodle and tie him up at a back table. As much as I like dogs, I didn't exactly appreciate the dog being on a leash so long it was free to snack on dropped items from the salad bar.

I walked into another to find two dogs with muddy paws sleeping on top of the dining tables.  Apparently, they belonged to one of the employees there. :dizzy:

And my cream of the crop was walking into one place and finding one of the female employees walking around the kitchen with no shirt. Fine and dandy except for the fact she must've been 80 years old and the bra looked like it hadn't been washed in the last twenty. Ugh.

It's like a nuclear dishwasher.  Runs hot enough to sterilize whatever is put through it.  Most of the time stuff runs through it on a conveyor belt.

Oh, I know that...  I used to work in a restaurant.  What I meant, is what is the problem with sterilizing the kettle multiple times?

I have no doubt that if consumer video cameras were as inexpensively available in 1992 as they are now there would be footage of them on the net.  They were into being watched.

HarumaN, the sterlizers I used ran with industrial soap.  You can't run food through that.

OH!   :o

They kept the soup IN the kettle?  I thought they were running an empty kettle through the washer to keep the metal hot.  Now that makes sense... lol.

She was decent... and 18.  Too covered in weird piercings and tattoos, though.  The couple thought they were vampires.  Literally.  The guy had dental implant fangs.  Still, not often as a teenager you get that show, so it was all good.  We were on a tight baking schedule most nights so I had to keep the work moving along while they were occupied.  Flour poofs out of the oddest places in the most comic ways and they had a real thing for red icing.

I worked at Numero Uno Pizza.  A dumbass working there bet the rest of the kitchen staff he could "Dip his hand in to the grease vat and pull it out before getting burned".   Even though we told him he was a dumbass...told him exactly what was going to happen...told him he'd be a complete moron to try...he did.

....and I watched his skin peel off his hand and half of it fall in to the fry grease.

Yup...they kept using the same grease (though they did "fish" out the skin).

I quit 2 days later.

I was cleaning the fryers after close one night, slipped, and got two fingers in the hot grease.  Holy ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, did that hurt!

Yeah, that's pretty much what they did. Soup went into pot. Lid went onto pot. Pot went into sterilizer. IIRC, the sterilizer they used let you "trim" the chemicals and they ran the water "clean."  :dunno

Last I checked, the place is no longer in business.

I worked fast food when I was 16-17 and even though we kept things clean, it was always fun to screw with people who complain about their food for no reason simply by being too nice to them.  They figure you wouldn't be that nice to someone complaining, so you must be doing something to their food.

My favorite time was when a guy came back saying his burger was raw because blood was dripping out of it, I was working the grill at the time and I looked at his burger and there was no blood, it was just juices that come from a well cooked burger.  I then looked up at the customer from behind the grill, gave him a huge grin, pointed at the grill and gave him a big thumbs up.  The guy freaked and started yelling for a manager, it was hilarious.

I guess I should say that it took about a minute (while the burger was cooking) of me continually smiling at the guy, pointing at the grill and giving thumbs up before he got furious and called for the manager.

When an angry customer sees a teenage fastfood cook continually give him a huge smile (often referred to as a ---Cleveland steamer--- eating grin) and an indication of how "good" his burger is going to be, they assume your doing something bad to it.  It doesn't make sense for a teenager to be overly grateful to someone who is angrily complaining about their cooking.

People tend to freak out like that. They get it in their heads that you're going to do ---Cleveland steamer--- to their food and they can't get it out of their head. Once that happens, there is absolutely nothing short of them coming into the kitchen and making the food themselves that will get it out of their head.

Here's a hint though. Besides never going through drive through and not acting like an ass, always take a good look at your receipt. Look for foods with impossible combinations. At one restaurant a hamburger plus ice meant to add a special ingredient to the burger.  ;)

Just curious, why would that matter?  Usually the people working on the food prep are out of site regardless right?

All I can say is this, there is a reason that Subway is high on our fast food list.

At Taco Bell and McDonalds, you can see the entire food prep assembly line. They can't do pretty much anything there without you seeing.

All I can say is this, there is a reason that Subway is high on our fast food list.

I did the night shift at Subway for two summers.  Sharidan is right, it's hard to target a specific person there, but the overall quality of the food is usually less than other places.

One night I was making this guy a double meat roast beef footlong.  As I'm wrapping it up the guy says "damn that's fresh beef, look at all the blood, it's even on the paper".  I thought it was weird but he paid and left.  That's when I noticed I had cut a 1" gash in my middle finger when slicing the sub and had bled all over his sandwich.  The knife was so sharp I hadn't even felt it.

At Taco Bell and McDonalds, you can see the entire food prep assembly line. They can't do pretty much anything there without you seeing.
Good thing too. I was in a "Mr Sub" with that layout, saw roaches crawling among the condiment tins. Threw my sandwich in the garbage and never went back there.

Just curious, why would that matter?  Usually the people working on the food prep are out of site regardless right?

How many people actually go back to complain once they've driven away?

Not sure.  How many people notice a pile of spooge in their burger anyway?  I sure as hell would drive back to snap some necks if I noticed that.

Oh man we used to see that in the dining halls at Northeastern that were in the freshman dorms.  They'd be slopping food on a tray and you'd see a cockroach wandering across the inside of the sneeze guard.

Here's a hint though. Besides never going through drive through

That's kind of the point. You usually can't watch the people prep your food while your fat ass is in a car. Did you read about the officer who went through a drive through, sucked down a soda, and found slime inside his cup? Went back and the dumb kid admitted he might have, "dribbled in the cup." IIRC, the officer basically tossed the kid in jail.

In 'N' Out has the right idea. The entire side of their drive through is a set of long windows that put the food production line in full view of the drive through. It still wouldn't prevent anyone from tainting the food, but it does send a clear message that people are watching.

My nephew worked at a Pizza Hut when he was a teen.
He said if they dropped food on the floor the manager made them pick it up and serve it, unless a customer was at the counter.
One night he said someone called in a pickup order, but never showed. After some time they threw it in the garbage.
Someone came in near closing time and ordered the same pizza. The manager told him to take the pizza out of the garbage and pop it in the microwave.
They served it to the customer, after it had sat out for quite some time, and had even been in the garbage.
That was all he could stand. He quit the next day.
