hiding windows xp logo and desktop
« on: February 01, 2008, 04:44:33 pm »
hi folks,

i was follow the instruction in wiki to Slimmboot-logo/microsoft way by creating a 640x480 16 bit color bmp then placing the file in the window directoryunder the name boot.bmp...done.

Then my computer/properties/advanced/startup and recovery/ settings select the edit startup options file. Add " /bootlogo /noguiboot" and that is suppose to show the bmp instead of the windows logo screen with the status bar underneath.

Well i did all that but for some reason it now gives me the option of loading windows xp or noguiboot like as if there was 2 operating system. Well if i choose the noguiboot then it attempt to reload and the same screen shows up so if i choose the windows option then it loads windows like normal and it does not hide the logo screen.

if any one knows what i did wrong pls advise or if you know of a different way to get ride of the logo screen with the status bar it would be create appreciated.

then after this is to get ride of the desktop...or hide it which ever is the simplyess.

cheers

That looks nice and easy.  Can anyone recommend any good boot screens for an arcade cab?  I didn't see any way to search them and there are 779 pages of screens!

You could also try bootskin.

I downloaded bootskin and it worked great, until I re-booted.
The screen I chose shows instead of the windows xp one, but then I get the blue screen of death.
I have to reboot in safe mode and change it back to the default windows screen.
I tried different skins and they all do that.
Any idea what is wrong?

Boot skin is funny that way. It wouldn't work one time I tried it either.

I just downloaded this program:

http://userxp.belchfire.net/indexbe.htm

I finally got it to work after messing around with it a bit.

Now, how do we hide the windows "welcome" screen and the "windows is shutting down screen"?

I just have noticed you may have confused 16-color with 16-bit color.  Double check this;  re-save your bitmap as a 16-color bitmap.  Make sure you are using the correct 16-color pallete if you are using something besides MS Paint to save it.

Nothing looks wrong with the boot.ini, thanks.
If you still have problems with a 16-color bitmap try naroowing things down by using the commandline switches separately:
Adding only " /noguiboot"  gives you a blank (black) boot.
Adding only " /bootlogo" either flashes your bootlogo and then resumes the xp logo or covers the XP logo with your bootlogo, I have forgotten which.
If each command works seperately, then try them together again.

the bmp is truely only 16 colors

so what i have done now is removed the bootlogo line and tried to just get the blank screen. the results were that it did  not work. so what i did is change the location of the " /noguiboot" line thru out the boot.ini file. if the line is before the {operating system} (line) then nothing happens at boot up. if the line is after the {operating system}(line) then the system is trying to recognise that " /noguiboot" as a seperate operating system as the window pops up to choose a different operating system under 30.seconds. if you let go then your normal windows xp with the status bar shows up....which is what i am trying to get ride off......HELP...

thanks

p.s. does it matter that i am running windows XP with NO service patches

If you want no logo whatsoever to show when you boot, go to msconfig, click on the boot.ini tab and select the box that says "/noguiboot".

I use that and it shows absolutely nothing.  Not sure if you can do that now that the rest of the stuff is borked or not.  May be worth a shot.

I have a custom desktop, custom cursor, custom boot screen, custom loading screen, custom start-up tune.

all programs were retrieved from the wincusomize site except the start-up tune you may have to download a file pack or something if any of them are not working right perhaps there is a file that the pc needs and is missing in order to run them right.
