What PC games do you guys play on your cabinets?
« on: April 17, 2003, 02:07:11 pm »
I'm not talking about first person shooters or the latest flight sim.  I'm talking about games that are simple, yet fun, and can be played well on arcade controllers.  I haven't tried them on my cabinet yet, but i'm thinking the following games would be good candidates:

Grand Theft Auto (the first one)
DXBall
DXBall 2
Old "Duke Nukem" type side scrollers.

Anyone else have a good PC game they play on their "arcade" cabinet?

This question has come up many times in other forums on this site....check the software forum!   ;D

As for my cab...I run:

GTA
Golden Tee(much better than the emulated version)
Tiger woods golf
Intellivision classics
Atari classics Vol. 1

Anyone run any DIFFERENT games than is usually discussed in this topic?

Golden Tee for PC
House of the Dead (lightgun)

Thought about a FPS or two....since you could use the trackball as a mouse and plenty of buttons for movement, firing, ect.

I run NHL Hockey 2002 and Madden 2002 on mine.  Basically, you can play any PC game that lets you remap the controls.

Sure you could play any PC game.  But the point here is that there are some games that are more "arcade-like" and better suited to a cabinet.  And there are a LOT of games out there that:

1) are way too complex to be played using only 6 buttons and a joystick (flight sims)
2) don't play well with a trackball (first-person shooters)
3) don't allow keyboard mapping of the controls

I'm also curious why people prefer the PC version of Golden Tee.  I haven't played it myself, but i'm wondering what makes it better than the arcade version it's modeled after.

No, the latest golden tee (2k, 99, fore, 3d, etc) in the arcade *is* the best/awesome for golden tee fans.

When people say they like the PC version of golden tee better than the original, they mean that they like it better than the non-IT Golden Tee original/Golden Tee II (the old old skool golden tee in MAME... the one where you can see the greens/fairways being redrawn, and it looks like a crappy port of links 386 graphics wise)

*shrug* at least that's what I hope they mean =P  plus the latest golden tee's are emulated yet (publically?) so the PC version is the only subsitute for home play.

PS I think i like playing turfmasters better though... but that's a different story

Yeah...what he said! ;D
Nothing beats a Golden Tee 2000 cab. but emulation of Golden Tee games are FAR from pretty. Stick with the PC version with the addon courses. Tiger Woods golf is good too.

--keep in mind, this is all asuming you are going with a trackball.--

I never tried madden on my cab. I think I have a copy of 2000 laying around. How does the resolution look on an Arcade monitor?

BTW: I tried a FPS on the cab.(Jedi Outcast-SICK GAME) While I have enough buttons for everything, I think I would need to be able to palm a basketball to reach some buttons while controling the trackball. LOL  ;D

Madden 2002 works pretty well on my cab.  But I only have 6 buttons per joystick, so I have a couple of things mapped to the Player 1 and Player 2 buttons that I don't use very often.  I don't know how it looks on an arcade monitor, though.  I have a VGA monitor in my cab.

NHL 2002 works perfectly because it doesn't take as many buttons to play.  And it's a hoot.

Is there any work around in Golden tee PC for name entry.  I'd hate to have to bring out the keyboard to type in player names.  I was thinking about having a macro program run in the backround where one button press would type in a name.  Does anyone have a solution for this?

I plan on having a wireless keyboard for golden tee.

I also run the remakes, like frogger, centipede, combat, etc..
Daytona and crazy taxi were ported to PC.
pinball sims, especially ms pinball and propinball series.
Armagetron

Why run the remakes when you can run the actual arcade game?  I own several arcade games that were ported to PC or PSX but i much prefer the Mame versions.

Because of the fancy 3D graphics, the alterative version. These aren;t the actual arcade games, but #D remakes.  All the remakes have the classical way of playing, but also a different way now that it is in 3D.

Warlords remake is pretty cool, so is combat.

My cabinet has Happyland Adventures (http://www.freelunchdesign.com/happyland.shtml) for my daughter, and House Of The Dead 2 for my Act-Labs gun.  I'll put Tiger Woods in when I get a better trackball, along with Golden Tee PC.  If I ever get my wheel mountable, I have Crazy Taxi ready to go in as well.

I bought NHL 2002 awhile back and it just came in a jewel case with a 2 page insert that detailed installation, but nothing else.  I explored the disk, but couldn't find instructions on it.

This may seem like a stupid question, but how can I get two players on the keyboard?  It seems to already setup for a one player game.  How do I add another player???  That was the only thing that held the game back (IMO) from being a great PC game on the arcade machine.

I don't believe it can be done.  At least I haven't been able to get mine to do it.  And I agree, it would be great if it could be done.  Madden 2002 has the same limitation.   :(

There's a 3 pack of worms out that has versions of worms2, armaggedon, and WWP that work on 2k/xp platform... (i think)

I dunno about the original worms, as it's dos based and probably hit or miss in XP... *shrug*  (awesome game though)

I igured that was the case.  Unfortunately this game is then useless on my cab if I can't play it 2 player running through the ipac using arcade controls.  If I can only get 2 player games going using controllers, I might as well run the game on my "entertainment system" pc I have hooked up to my television.

That's why I have usb ports on my cabinet.  If I had an analog joystick to hack onto the control panel I;d go completely different.  NFL Blitz wouldbe playable and NHL would be playable on the control panel.

What I don't like is PC games that ALMOST let you remap all the controls, but not quite. Like they have a few that are hardcoded, or have some keys that aren't allowed to be mapped.

My first button on my cab is enter, and my coin button sends escape. That lets me deal with most menus/frontends. but not all of them. particularly infuriating are Y/N prompts. I may reprogram 4-way so left sends Y and right sends N just to deal with that (Doom does that).

I recall at least one emulator that won't let you map return as a control.

My favorite PC games on the cabinet (Which has one 4-way, one 8-way 6 buttons, a trackball 2 start buttons and a coin/escape button) are,

Pod Racer - takes some getting used to to play this with an 8-way rather than an analog.

Frogger (New Version) Good old 4-way action!

Doom II (or maybe it is Final Doom, I dunno, I have some version of it).

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

So you guys stand in front of your cab and play with a gamepad?  See, I just don't like that.  If I'm using a gamepad, I'd much rather sit on a beanbag on the floor.  My cab has USB ports, but I just don't like the feeling of standing there and not leaning on the control panel to play a game.  IMO, if you can't use your arcade controls, you're better off playing the game on some other system then your cab.

I don't understand you guys complaining about remapping keys.  They make key remappers and you can reconfig the IPAC/JPAC on the fly. Be Glad they actually let you use a keyboard.  Alot of game dont!

I think it's fine, no harm done.  I'm gonna try the demo sometime on a Betson/Imperial 3" TB.  I'll let you know how it handles when I get the chance to download and play it.

I will be once I have money to buy it.  I love the arcade version though.  That hugge bowling ball trackball is ultra smooth.  I wonder how they did that.

Nope, I think it would work great though. I love the arcade version. I played a couple of frames at gameworks, it runs on a big projection screen and you control it by spinning a huge bowling ball look-a-like trackball that sits on a stand. It's awesome.

This thread got me experimenting with different games I own and dont play anymore(some I had totally forgot about ). I got some new ones off the net as well...

Here are some of the games I found work well with ArcadeVGA and an arcade monitor.

Madden 2002
Knight Rider-...(fun for intro movie alone...a shadowy flight into a dangerous underworld of a man who does not exsist...)
Mortal kombat 4(computer version)
Dragon's lair Authentic Arcade(cd-rom)
BALLS
Crazy taxi

FYI HyperBowl is widely available on several of the neo-napster services.  I'm going to check it out tonight and I'll let you know how it goes.  As always, if you enjoy the game please support the developer by purchasing it.

I've been playing NBA Live 2003 (EA Sports), thats a really cool game that suits an arcade cab.
