4:3 lcd monitors over 20 inches?
« on: October 19, 2007, 04:19:22 pm »
Do they excist?

I'm currently in the planning/research stages of a slim lcd upright, and I'm wondering if there's any lcd monitors larger than 20 inches? I can't seem to find any. I'm thinking a 24-25 inch 4:3 would be perfect, but it looks like I'll settle for a used 20 incher.

Oh, and hi all, I've been lurking for a couple of weeks, reading up on project threads and the wiki. Nice site!

Wow those things are expensive.  I paid about $200 for a Dell 19" LCD monitor and I'm pretty happy with it - the bezel is quite slim and is even around the entire screen.

I was thinking about getting a 27" wide screen monitor myself.  I was thinking that the extra size would make up for the black bars on the sides of the display.  They are only about $350 as well.

Am I missing something?  Is this a bad idea?

Did a little bit more reseach.  This TV is a little more, but the reviews for it are really good.

I thought I read somewhere on these forums that you get more playing area with a 4:3 vs 16:9, even with black bars.  I am guessing possibly this has to do with the measurements of the screens being diagonal?   :dunno

That is true for monitors of equal sizes, but I was suggesting getting a bigger one.  I threw together a comparison in Illustrator.  It looks like a 27" widescreen cut off with black bars has the same amount of real estate as a 22" 4:3 monitor.

A 26" 4:3 monitor would be awesome.  I'm going hunting right now.

please note that the 27" wide screen is the gray area, not the white.  I thought my post would have a white background, the blue background made it a little confusing.  This post should show it properly.

Newegg has about 10 or so 21"+ LCDs.  Most are for photography pros though and have poor response times between 16 and 20ms.

You might want to check the Anandtech LCD Thread as a resource, specifically if you are concerned with response/contrast...

Wow that's a great resource.  It's amazing how shady the LCD manufacturers are.

Amazing how shady most all manufacturers are.

I did quite a bit of research prior to purchasing my first LCD, about 6 months ago, and was alarmed at how many units change parts and components within model releases; makes it a PITA to find what you're really wanting, esp when ordering online. Best advice is to take your time and exercise caution.

So what LCD did you end up purchasing and what sort of setup are you using it in?

I've got a Dell 1905FP ready to put into a cab, once the cab is miraculously built by either myself or a band of merry elves. It's a poor quality, bottom of the line, mass marketed TN panel that plays the classics (my interest) with ease. The display even performs for some modern PC games, albeit not as well as other LCDs. I've tested the panel with the PC I intend to use, in both vertical and horizontal orientations, and it met my needs. It's neither a marathon winner, nor exceptional in any aspect. Nice and average (at best), and overall blah. However, the price couldn't be beat: mine was free.

All of my research was for my main PC at home. I've never cared for LCDs in the past because they're notorious for incorrect display of color and depth, and horrible for photo manip and design work. But I wanted to take the plunge when my CRT started to go. I ended up with an S-IPS panel NEC 20WMGX2 20" Widescreen to replace my trusty 21" Sony Trinitron CRT. Got a good price, but she was still more expensive than most of that size. However, I'm now a convert and advocate. She's a beaut.

For me, it comes down to use. A crappy TN LCD panel is fine for my use in a cab as I will be playing mostly classics and emus. I won't be using it as a DVD media box. I don't need pixel-precise 3D shading and rendering for F.E.A.R. Ghosting isn't much of an issue, and an average response time will be fine. So I can accept the compromise, get a lesser LCD, and either stay in budget or use that cash elsewhere on the cab.

32 inches high equals 21 inches high.   To this day, I have some regrets with not going this route, but my whole arcade would need a rebuild, and I just don't have the energy....file it under GOOD ENOUGH!

this is the biggest flat screen 4x3 ive seen

heh we have one of these at the office.  i was pretty particular about showing our work on a 1024x768 native 4:3 since it would show web page design 'comps' the most appropriately...

I guess that makes sense as long as you know that a 21" monitor is not 21 inches high.  Comparing a diagonal to a vertical doesn't make sense.  As I have shown earlier, a 27" widescreen monitor will have about the same real estate at 4:3 as a 22" standard monitor.

A 32" widescreen is MUCH larger than a 21" standard monitor, even with black bars on the side.

I guess that makes sense as long as you know that a 21" monitor is not 21 inches high.  Comparing a diagonal to a vertical doesn't make sense.

What was confusing?   It is 21 inches(I believe I measured the screen the other day..but I could have just looked at the tag).   My point was that it was a couple of inches larger, with to me the added benefit of widscreen for other purposes.

For me, there is alot of advantage.

But yes, I do understand that 4:3 is not 16x9(or whatever it is).  Hence me designating widescreen.

Now lighten up.   I only gave an option for 21 inches(or thereof) with current tech.

Comparing a diagonal to a vertical does make sense if only considering the height.   In short, a 32 inch widescreen has everything that 4:3 ,21 display has and MORE!

A 27 inch widescreen is obviously shorter then the 21 inches(I think around 19 inches actually) so it doesn't fit your description.

Hoopz,

I don't know where you got that random quote, but what is sad to me is how you would take the time to post that out of context.

From memore, I was referring to the fact that MAME is inaccurate as not being perfectly the original hardware...same goes for the multisynce monitor.

If you didn't understand, then you should have asked me instead of personal attacking.   I can't even make a simple post without that crap.   If that is all you got out of that thread I feel very sad for you.
