I did quite a bit of research prior to purchasing my first LCD, about 6 months ago, and was alarmed at how many units change parts and components within model releases; makes it a PITA to find what you're really wanting, esp when ordering online. Best advice is to take your time and exercise caution.
So what LCD did you end up purchasing and what sort of setup are you using it in?
I've got a Dell 1905FP ready to put into a cab, once the cab is miraculously built by either myself or a band of merry elves. It's a poor quality, bottom of the line, mass marketed TN panel that plays the classics (my interest) with ease. The display even performs for some modern PC games, albeit not as well as other LCDs. I've tested the panel with the PC I intend to use, in both vertical and horizontal orientations, and it met my needs. It's neither a marathon winner, nor exceptional in any aspect. Nice and average (at best), and overall blah. However, the price couldn't be beat: mine was
free.
All of my research was for my main PC at home. I've never cared for LCDs in the past because they're notorious for incorrect display of color and depth, and horrible for photo manip and design work. But I wanted to take the plunge when my CRT started to go. I ended up with an S-IPS panel NEC 20WMGX2 20" Widescreen to replace my trusty 21" Sony Trinitron CRT. Got a good price, but she was still more expensive than most of that size. However, I'm now a convert and advocate. She's a beaut.
For me, it comes down to use. A crappy TN LCD panel is fine for
my use in a cab as I will be playing mostly classics and emus. I won't be using it as a DVD media box. I don't need pixel-precise 3D shading and rendering for F.E.A.R. Ghosting isn't much of an issue, and an average response time will be fine. So I can accept the compromise, get a lesser LCD, and either stay in budget or use that cash elsewhere on the cab.
