ArcadeVGA issue?
« on: September 16, 2007, 05:56:50 pm »
I am having an odd problem with my ArcadeVGA card.  I cannot get it to sync correctly to my monitor.  As a side note, I cannot get the picture stable enough to install the correct drivers for the AVGA card, so it is currently running on default VGA drivers (@640x480).

Hardware:
Kentek/Sharp Image Dual Sync SI527 (RCA tube)
ArcadeVGA AGP V2
GGG Keywiz encoder
Jamma Fingerboard
Area 51/Maximum Force Duo (Jamma board)

The monitor works fine with all of my Jamma boards.  The H/V sync knobs can be adjusted +/- 15 degrees on any of them without messing up the picture.  I have attached an oscilloscope output from one of them.  The horizontal frequency is ~16.1khz and the vertical is ~60.1hz.  The pulses are ~13 and 200 microseconds long (H/V).

When I plug in the AVGA, I cannot get the picture stable vertically or horizontally.  I measured the sync at the monitor board, and it is receiving the signals shown in the second picture.  The sync pulses on it are ~7/65 (H/V) microseconds wide and the frequencies are ~59.7hz and ~15.6khz.

Occasionallly, the output looks like this third pic.  I am not sure what is happening there, as it looks like the V sync is getting stuck on.

Anyone have any ideas what else I can do?

here is my input. Dunno if you already done or know it.

Sometimes the Monitor need to have the H&V sync separated. Sometimes the monitor need composite (H/V twisted).

If monitor need to be separated sync, the AVGA card must be setup. There is a MOON SHAPE on the pcb that need to be OPENED. Default is CLOSED (composite setup). So even if you connected the wires separately, only one of those wire is active and the other NC.

Hopes thats the case.

The monitor is set up to take composite sync, and that is what both the working jamma boards and the AVGA are putting out.

I don't see a moon to open/close, but in looking more closely at the card, one of the capacitors seems to be leaking a yellow gook out the top.  It is hard and crusty, but has definitely oozed out from the cap.

You can see where that cap is on the board in this pic.

My BAD. I was thinking of the VIDEO AMP. Thats what i was refering too about the moon shape that need to be open when using separated syncs.
Alaso, some monitors need more than what the AVGA voltage is giving out. I think the card is only giving out 1V. You might need the Video AMP to get a full 5v.

Anyway, if that cap is ooozzziiinnngg some juice, it aint a good thing . Get a hold of Andy, or you can just replace the cap yourself, you seem like the know type of guy  ;D

I had replaced a cap on AVGA card also.

One thing more, you are using a VGA/RGB hack cable ? You can easily make of this yourself. The pinout or the diagram is located in the ArcadeOS page somewhere. If you need it, LMK.

I don't think the voltage is the problem, as the brightness is fine on the monitor, it is just the sync that is off.

Andy says he thinks the yellow ooze is solder flux, but it looks like electrolytic ooze to me.  The other thing he said to do was to separate the sync, but if I do that, I can't play any of my jamma games, because they all use composite.

I am using a VGA/RGB hack cable.

I guess I will try separating the sync, but like I said, it isn't going to do me much good in the long run.

Woot!

Separating the vertical and horizontal syncs fixed the problem.

Now I just have to come up with a good way to have composite sync hooked up for my jamma games and separate sync for my AVGA.
