Oh man, that's a big problem around here.  Not specifically kegs but anything metal.  People are stealing playground equipment, sewer control pieces, fences, construction site supplies, anything they can make off with.  Last year I was replacing my storm door and had the old aluminum one in my yard while doing the work, intending to make use of the old one elsewhere.  Went to the hardware store and when I returned it was gone.

At my local liquor store, deposits on kegs recently jumped from $10 to $30.  I'm guessing this is to discourage people from selling them for scrap metal.

I also heard that beer prices are rising because farmers are devoting more land to corn (for ethanol) instead of barley...kegs for me have been $55 for the last 2 years and this month they jumped to $65.  I think it might be time to start brewing my own beer.

If you are going thru that many kegs, maybe you should just drink less beer. ;) ;D

You sound like my wife!

But I typically go through an 8 gallon keg (1/4 barrel) in about 6 weeks.  So roughly 8-10 kegs/year, and the extra $10/keg means I'll be spending $80-100 more this year for beer!

128 oz. per gallon times 8 gallons is 1024 fl. oz.

1024 fl. oz. is 85.3 - 12 oz. bottles of beer

So, 85 bottles over 42 days (6 weeks) is about 2-12 oz. bottles per day.

Yeah...two beers a day is still a hell of a lot of beer when it's EVERY day. It's also a metric ton of calories over the course of a year.

I maybe drink 10 beers a month, and that would be the exception, say, in summer, when I hit a few weekend BBQs. If I drank 4 gallons of beer a year, I'd be shocked.

Some people drink coke, I drink beer.  12 oz of coke has 140 calories (http://www.thedailyplate.com/food-nutrition/food/coca-cola/12oz-355ml-coke-classic) and my favorite beer has 149 calories (http://www.thedailyplate.com/food-nutrition/food/miller-brewing-company/leinenkugels-honey-weiss)

But no one says anything when someone sits at their desk all day and drinks 3-4 bottles of coke, but 2 beers at night is a hell of a lot of beer?

I play competitive tennis 4+ hours per week, so I'm not too worried about the beer belly right now.  My BMI is still under 25, so I'm considered "normal weight".

I drink beer because I enjoy the flavor and I think the best way to end a long day at work is to drink a beer while cooking some meat on the grill.

I just did a little calculation :).  Since I have a barcode scanner attached to my kegerator to log all my beers, I found out that I have had 271 beers so far this year (191 days), so assuming all the beers were 149 calories (which they weren't, occasionally I order a keg of light beer), that averages to 211 calories from beer/day.  That's less than the amount of calories in one 20oz bottle of coke.

Why the hell would you have a scanner next to your keg?

It's a fun game when you're having a party..."who drank the most last night?"

But the real reason I did it was because in college (UW-Madison...hence the username) you could just drive to the liquor store and pick up any keg you wanted.  But once I graduated and moved away from the college town, now I have to order my kegs ahead of time.  Now that I have the barcode scanner installed, I can track how many beers I've had out of the current keg and know when I need to order a new one.

Added bonus is that it's fun to graph the number of beers I've had and compare the numbers to when my wife is PMSing...for some reason I always drink more that week :)

Hey drunkatuw, your not drinking 3-4 cokes at work during day as well are you?  That would be a heck of a lot of calories to sock away on a regular basis.  I drink diet coke, so zero calories and still the yummy caffeine.   ;D

I think people who drink a couple of full sugar cokes a day have a problem, as well. I've drank Diet for about 20 years now, recently cut to Caffeine Free Diet and I drink water (filtered with a Pur three-stage) more than anything these days. I've had three full sugar pops this year-two Cherry Cokes at a party, for old time's sake and a RC when I picked up a slice of pizza a couple months ago, again, old time's sake.

At the rate I'm going, I might top 5K calories from beverages for the whole year!

Which would you rather have, in soda terms?  150 calories of caffeine and raw sugar or 0 calories and an artificial sweetener linked to Alzheimer's?  The 0 calorie sweeteners are just now, after 20 or so years of heavy use, showing their long term effects, and the studies coming out are not pretty.

I'll add another option:

Drink low calorie beer which (when taking in the proper amounts) has a similar effect to Alzheimer's.

That would be my choice.

Technically, you are not getting raw sugar in soda, you are getting processed high fructose corn syrup which is even worse than raw sugar. However, you can still special order Dr. Pepper made with cane sugar. ;D

I've had a total of 2 cans of soda in the last year (on plane flights).  While at work, I only drink water, about 64oz per day.  But back on topic here :), our local paper covered this same story today.

And I have a hard time imagining that something that gives me a headache about 5 minutes after consumption (every artificial sweetener I have tried) is better for me than sugar.

Admitedly, my lazy ass needs to drink much less soda, but switching to diet is not the solution for me.

There are only two liquor stores in town (each has 3 or 4 branches though).  The $150 deposit is for the tap and keg, the deposit for the keg only is $30 (used to be $10).

So the deposit on the tap is $120?

And what town only has two liquor stores?  Even in a 4000 person town there are usually 3-4.  They're like donut shops.

There are two big stores, Andy's liquor and Applo's liquor, each have 4 stores I believe, so a total of 8.  Then there are some small ma and pa stores which don't sell kegs and don't have a very wide selection of wine or beer.

Did a quick yellow pages search and there are 15 total liquor stores, 7 which are one of the two big chains (relatively speaking).

I'm barely drinking the diet stuff anymore, either. I'm definitely nowhere near "20 or so years of heavy use".

And high fructose corn syrup (the stuff they use in full sugar pop) is hardly good for you, either. See: Type 2 Diabetes.

While I agree the chain-drinkers of soda are consuming TONS of calories, the concer over high-fructose being WAY worse than sucrose (cane sugar) is actually not as bad as previously thought:

Not saying that consuming large quantities is GOOD for you, but the fructose may not be as damaging as previously thought vs sucrose.  In fact, it has been shown that sucrose after a few days/weeks breaks down to a form very similary chemically to fructose....

What is this talk of the original topic???   :blah:

How do you expect us to thread-jack this topic if you keep brining up the "original" topic???
