Here's a pretty good miter saw for $40.97 shipped. Not a typo. It's not the best out there but most of the amazon reviews have been pretty positive. 60 reviews and a 4 star average. Works for me.

That's a great starter set as all of those bits are useful. As for the discount, any BYOAC member can join woodnet. There's a lot to be learned there.

Here's a couple of deals I came across this morning.

First is a Irwin 29 Piece Black Oxide drill bit set. This is a very decent set at only $20.90 with free shipping on orders over $25. Much better than the B&D set I have.

Next is a 7" wide 8" opening woodworker's vise. At only $16.52 it's hard to beat. Anyone who has used a bench vise knows how useful they can be.

Chad, I can totally ~~vag~~ vouch for the supar teh kewlness of that protractor. At that price, that's a flat steal, and if you EVER do any molding work around the house, it'll pay for itself with one use.

I coulda swore I paid about that for mine, but I haven't seen that thing for less than double that price, and it's flat out awesome

I may end up doing molding work around the house... our molding is all painted white and one of the things I'd like to do is replace it with stained. Not sure if that means removing/stripping/staining or just replacing, but I'd like to do it at some point.

I'm going room to room redoing our molding over time, but with all our corners being 90 degrees, would this do anything for me?

From what all of the finish contractors I've talked to tell me, few if any of them are really 90 degrees. They look that way but usually end up varying from corner to corner.

I have one and use it all the time! Obviously, it's designed for doing trim and molding work. I also use mine to check that corners are square when I'm building cabinets, check machine setups, etc. It's pretty big though, which can be a disadvantage for some things. Checking the squareness of small wooden boxes or the setups on some of my metal working machines can be a bit difficult due to the size. Still, it's one of those tools I wouldn't be without now that I've used it for a while...

Yes. It would show you that what you thought was a 90 degree corner is in fact an 89, 91, 86 or whatever degree corner. The odds that you actually DO have exact 90 degree corners are slim, considering when your house "settles", there go your perfect corners.

Dumb question...why would a plunge router be perfect as a dedicated router table router? I had assumed a fixed base would be best for that?

A lot of people prefer the plunge router over a fixed base because of the depth adjustment. It's really a matter of preference though. Plunge routers in tables are best used with router plates.

Plunge routers work best with some of the aftermarket lift kits (e.g. Router Raizer).

Peak or continuous use? That's a lot of HP for a 110v device.

It's peak. Universal motors (the kind in shop vacs, drills, routers, sanders, etc) are usually rated in peak HP for routers and shop vacs and craftsman's benchtop saws. Pay attention to the amp rating instead. I know a 15 amp router may not seem all that much more powerful than a 12 amp one, but the difference is in the construction and size of the motor in general. There's a reason why 3+HP routers weigh 16lbs.

Basically follow amp ratings for universal type motors.

I'm definitely going to have to pick up a hammer drill for finishing the basement - not a fan of cordless tools, though. I like to unplug my tools when I walk away from them because there are just too many little hands in my house.

With a hammer drill, you're probably better off going corded anyway. You'll likely get a lot more power for a lot less money and a lot less weight. Trust me: you don't want an under-powered hammer drill. I needed to make a bunch of holes in concrete and brick last year. Figured it'd be the only time I'd need a hammer drill, so I bought a cheap Craftsman model. What a pile of junk! Even leaning on the drill with all my weight, it wouldn't make much progress. Ended up returning it and replacing it with a Hilti (they were on sale @ Home Depot). I was a bit skeptical of the brand, but it was happy to bore into my concrete foundation like it was butter...
