Yeah, I figure I won't need it long, just long enough to set all of the bottom plates when I frame the basement.

FYI: Hilti makes stellar drills for concrete!  I used to use a big Hilti to make 2-1/2" holes through concrete pads.  That drill took a beating and always came back for more.

Very true...I remember the first time I used a Hilti...holes weren't 2 1/2"...but it melted through concrete like butter.

Lowe's has a deal now through June 17th where if you buy the Black & Decker "Firestorm" starter kit (basically the drill and battery and a case) you get a free power tool. The "Firestorm" Single Source are tools with an interchangeable battery. It's $50 for the drill, then you get to choose a free tool.

Lowe's Ad

I wanted to get the Jigsaw with the drill, but they were out of those by the time I got there, so I went with the Reciprocating saw.

Is an impact driver a hammer drill?

EDIT:  duh, guess not, the hammer drill is at the bottom.

Impact drivers and hammer drills pound in different directions. IIRC, a hammer drill effectively pounds on the end of the drill bit at the same time it's turning the drill. An impact driver, on the other hand, pounds in the axis of rotation. Which is to say that it pounds in the same direction the driver is turning.

Good question!

I use a hammer drill to make holes in concrete and brick. And that's about it.

An impact driver, on the other hand, is good for anything that needs to turn. Mostly, this means screws, lag screws, lag bolts, and regular nuts/bolts. The nice thing about an impact driver is that, unlike a normal drill/driver, it doesn't try to break your wrist when high-torque is required. The downside is that they make a lot of noise! I almost need to use hearing protection when operating my 12V Makita impact driver...

I may head over to Lowe's on the way home for that deal to get the hammer drill... that's a pretty good deal for that stuff.

You really don't need one of those, unless you're going to build a deck or something else that requires longer screws.  So yeah, snap one up ;)

Got the Porter Cable $50 rebate on the router today.  Both $50 rebates came in no problem, even with the 10% off Lowe's coupon.

Think about what you'll use it for before buying. My 12V Makita will easily twist the heads off #8 wood screws if you're not careful! If you plan to use it for normal woodworking stuff, 12V may be all you need...

Actually, the PS20 is just a regular drill/driver. Their small impact driver is the PS40-2 "Impactor". The PS20 has 80 inch-lbs of torque, while the PS-40 has 800! It's also twice the price of the PS20; around $200 at Amazon. For that kind of cash, you can get the 12V Makita impact driver that also includes a 12V drill!

Though the Bosch PS-20 isn't an impact drill, I would recommend it for anybody looking to get a regular drill/driver.

OOPS.  Those folks at Amazon had me convinced.  I do know people who have that DRILL/DRIVER and they do love it.  From the product description I see that it isn't an impact driver at all, but this Amazon page could sure fool a guy... notice the category tree and list at the top of the page?  Make me look like an idiot will they?.... oh, yes I guess they will. Damn.

I still want one.

Anyone who purchases the PS20 to use as a drill will probably be deeply disappointed... Because of the "Clic-Change" bit holder, you'll have to have hex-shank drill bits which aren't terribly common.

For an impact driver, I recommend one of these:
Sears Impact Driver

Dedicating a $100 power tool to impact driving is just retarded for a home diy'er. One of these things though can be a lifesaver when working on old cars. I've put mine to use on a few occasions with stubborn screws/bolts. Plus you get the added benefit of taking your frustration out on a stubborn part in a constructive way. ;D

Oh!  Now I understand the difference in need.  Forward thrust vs rotational torque.  The car example made it clear.

That's my favorite part (besides the size/weight, of course).  I love being able to just flip bits in and out without loosening and tightening a chuck.  I can change my driver one-handed while holding a piece in place.  But I only use my pocket driver for quick work.  If you're looking for your first, and only, drill and you already have standard drill bits, I wouldn't advise it.

For some reason, I've never had much luck with these hammer-driver mechanical impact drivers. Maybe it's just because I bought a cheap one? In any event, a pneumatic or electric impact driver/wrench seems to work much better for me.

It all depends on what you're doing. I built a deck last summer. Had to drive 1000+ screws into joists to secure the deck boards. I bought an impact driver specifically for this task and it was truly a lifesaver! Now that I have one, I find that I use it pretty frequently. The car and motorcycle see most of the use, but anytime I need to drive a 2" or longer screw the impact driver gets the job. It's much less likely to ruin the screw head or break my wrist than my regular drill/drivers...

I just headed over and picked up the starter kit and the hammer drill for $50+tax at the register.  I checked, the drill standalone is on the shelf for $100 and the hammer drill is $70 on the shelf.  I don't think either comes with a battery individually.

I have a lot of bushes too, but not 200+ foot worth of extension cord :~  Anyways, I got the drill, and the circular saw.  The saw is normally 70+ by itself, it's got a laser guide for cutting wood, it's so slick!  Definitely a great deal guys!

Delta AP400 Shopmaster 1 Horsepower 650 CFM Vertical Bag Dust Collector, 120/240-Volt 1 Phase  - $117 +$50 s/h

http://www.amazon.com/Delta-AP400-Shopmaster-Horsepower-Collector/dp/B00006K005/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-5953545-8795014?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1182349494&sr=8-2

Is this a good deal?  I'm looking for a dust collector.  There is a Shopsmith DC3300 in my area for sale on CL also but offer only on the price.  Which is better?
Next I'll be on fries, and that's when the big money starts rolling in.

Say it with me everyone: www.tinyurl.com is your friend!

That aside, I haven't seen many glowing reviews of the AP400. I was considering it, until I read a review in Fine Woodworking that said the 50-850 was better and the 50-760 was even better than that. I found a barely used 50-760 for $100 or $150, so I went with that. Very nice! Though I occasionally with it had a bit more suction... which makes me think that the AP400 wouldn't have enough horsepower. Most people will tell you to have a minimum of 850CFM if you want to collect dust from a tablesaw and that 1200CFM is even better.

I haven't used nor heard anything about the Shopsmith DC3300. But looking at the machine and the specs (e.g. 1/2HP) I'd guess it's a complete piece of junk. Which would fit right in with the company's reputation...

Why use tinyurl when you can use the [url] tags?  They're there for a reason.

Many people don't know how to use the URL tags. The documentation for them is buried in the help system, which is itself difficult to find. And the UI here doesn't exactly make it easy to use the tags correctly with a long URL. Other systems prompt for both the URL and the text to be displayed, which is a better setup IMHO.

TinyURL is a great alternative for people who don't want to go to the trouble to figure out or use the tags...

Either way works, I just hate adding a third party dependency.  If TinyURL is down, so is your link.

There is a [url] button in the toolbar, if that helps.

I'm sure that's exactly how we got the terribly long URL that's now throwing off the formatting of the entire page...

The forum software recognizes a url in the middle of a post and makes it a link.  If you quote his post, you'll see there are no [url] tags on it.

Here is his link embedded in [url] tags.

You used the tag incorrectly and didn't even terminate it.   :)  The only reason your, or his, usage is a link at all is the forum parser is making it one.

EDIT:  wait, that second one is right.  So what are we even discussing?   :)  Do it either way, just avoid the giant untagged urls that eff up the forum page.  We are in agreement.
