Crystal Castles Restore
« on: November 26, 2006, 03:01:28 pm »
All right time to change gears since my cabinet isn't getting anywhere... I while back I scored a Crystal Castles that was getting ready to meet it's maker... A closed arcade left it behind out in the weather along with a few other machines that looked unsalvageable... Had I known then what I know now I would have grabbed whatever I could off those cabinets, but that was a few years ago back when I was a newbie here, when I wouldn't go anywhere without Saint's book....

I've had it stored in my shed, I knew that the neckboard was cracked after messing with it the first day I got it.... in fact my 9th post as a member was a question about the neckboard

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=19805.msg159258#msg159258

yep and good ol paigeoliver was there to help me out.....

well back to the topic I finally got a neckboard for it a few months back and hooked it up, sadly that didn't resolve the no picture, but I'm working on it....

but here is just the introduction and a few pictures so that I can document my long slow restore project....

p.s. I havn't forgot about my cabinet I'm just taking a break....

Warning

These next few pictures you may find disturbing

unfortunatly the front of the cabinet has received some sever damage... the wood around the coin door was severly beaten and the poor ol' marquee has seen it's better days....

After looking at those pictures you may be asking... Why not just pull the boards and try to sell them to make mony to finish your other cabinet? Why jump in to this project?

Well for me I hate to see something be destroyed... I'm sort of an arcade purist....

nothing pisses my of more than when some one takes a Centipede slaps on a franken panel and calls it their "Uber"cade....

building a cabinet isn't hard work.... a few sheets of plywood or MDF some precise measuring and cutting.... A little glue and screws and voila.... You have something to be proud of....

now restoring that beat up cabinet back to what it was supposed to be... that's what BYOACers should be about.....

but enough of that,,,

let's show you the guts....

As you can see it's a little dirty in there, well it's been sitting in my shed for a while... funny how the bees never nested in this cabinet but were attracted to my yellow "Old Skool" cabinet.....

guess Bently Bear was watching over it waiting for the day he can rise again....

Wow, you've certainly got your work cut out for you! I look forward to seeing how this progresses, especially as someone who likes and owns the game. Good luck with it!  :applaud:

edit: At first glance I thought your Big Blue cap was missing from the power brick, the I saw the mod that had been done. Interesting to say the least and I doubt that's any kind of factory mod. I've never seen it it any Atari games that use Big Blue.

The damage on the coin door plate is pretty nasty.  I will be watching to see how that turns out.  Good luck with this project.

I've been giving a little thought to how I'm going to fix the coin door are....

I'm thinking I either need to take out the whole peice and replace it....

I'm going to need to replace the artwork around that area anyways....

does anyone else have any ideas?

Yikes... that marquee will NOT be easy to piece together yourself. It's made of a top part of wood that is attached at about 45' to another piece of wood that's more like a frame (middle is cut out to let light through). The worst part: It has ROUNDED wood. It's rounded where the two pieces meet and rounded at the bottom of the front piece.

My site is here: http://www.rayb.com/arcade/index.html

But the site *I* referred to when I re-assembled my smashed up marquee frame was this site: http://stickycarpet.com/pinx/ccresto.html
