Stupid Win98 Question - users
« on: September 25, 2006, 09:22:29 am »
How do you get rid of a user login in Win98?

This scrap computer I have has a login for somebody named Anthony.  It has no password, but I can't get it to stop asking for Anthony.

What do you have to do to make it JUST BOOT to Windows?

Do you have to take out all of the network capability and then restore it or what? I won't let me delete Anthony's user account.

If I remember corrctly, just goto the CONTROL panel, Network...and there was an option to make you System to use MICROSOFT NETWORK, WINDOWS (forgot) ...if you find it, just set it to the other one. If not just remove the NETWORK card and try that.

You can either use Tweak UI and set autologin under network tab.

Or find the following key in regedit:

Code: [Select]
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Set the key AutoAdminLogon to 1

Thanks I'll try the regedit.

I don't know what Tweak UI is.

The machine doesn't have a network card in it, never did have one.

I couldn't find "autologin" under the network tab. But I'll look. I knew there was some switch.

Thanks.

I meant the network tab in Tweak UI, which is a powertoy by Microsoft. You can download it from here.

All Tweak UI does is give an interface to a bunch of registry hacks like the one I gave you. So both methods achieve the same thing.

I didn't find the autologin yet. And there isn't a network tab that lets me shut that feature off I can find.
I did manage to change anthony's name LOL.

The logon in Windows 98 is presented when a Ethernet/Dialup Adapter is installed. Check the control panel applet Networking to see what you have installed. It would have to be an old computer indeed to not have a network adapter.

Are you using Profiles? I've had issues with Windows98 Profiles.

Either way, TweakUI should fix your problem. Check out this article to resolve your issues:

I tried it again last night. There is no key "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon"

I found the login's for the users.  I tried to delete them, but it still insisted on a login.

i no how to do this if i remember correctly

i got a 98 out in the garage i'll get it out in a min and see

i know its something to do with the loging in options

windows network

windows login or something like that theres options i'll see what option my 98 is on

p.s. on my xp this one i  used this booty to change start booting screen but uninstalled it as it was shocking so now when i turn my pc on it comes up

beasty (this bootscreen effort)
Windows XP Home SP2
Windows Recovery system

but of course it loads the top option which then because not recognised resets the pc and starts over. how do i get rid of that so i don't have to press down windows xp enter because i tent to hit the power walk off and come back when its loaded

If you have a network neighborhood icon on your desktop, right click it, and go to properties.

When you are in there, select anything that says 'client' and then click remove.
Most will be Microsoft client, you might also have a novel client, or maybe even something else. After you take them all out you should be good to go.

David,

Try this:
solution 1:
Select Run from the Start Menu, type 'control userpasswords2' and click Ok.
Turn off the 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer' option and click Ok.

OR

solution 2:
If you have only one user account with no password configured, Windows XP will log you in automatically.

Otherwise, you'll have to Obtain and install the Windows XP version of TweakUI.

David you need to get your own thread.

In your own thread I would tell you that you need to edit your boot.ini, and then I would give you some good warnings before doing so, but since you don't have your own thread I'm not going to say those things I just said.

I deleted the client stuff, went into the registry. I found the user names and deleted them there.  I deleted all but the "ADMIN" login in users, because it wouldn't let me delete it.

Rebooted and it still wanted a user. Still.

I could find no key that said autoadminlogon.

I had trouble with this before. Last time I took out the entire networking section and basically had to reload the damn thing.

It is in a cabinet in pieces. I can't connect it to the net.  It is basically a HDD and nothing else.  I can't believe there isn't some freaking switch for this.

I guess I'll reload it when I find a ##@!@# CD drive to hook up to it.

David actually made a good point, you need to check your Network settings and make sure you don't have "Client for Novell Networks" or "Microsoft Family Logon". I think "Client for Microsoft Networks" is okay. From memory once you login once a *.pwd file is created for the user so it should automatically login okay next time. Also make sure the user's password is set to nothing.

The Tweakui worked great! Thanks leapinlew!

I didn't understand how to install it, but once I figured that out it was a must have tool for Win98!
