Videogame movies
« on: August 21, 2006, 02:22:49 am »
Is there a comprehensive list of films based on, inspired by, or heavily related to gaming?  If not, let me be the first one to start....right now:

Bloodrayne
Double Dragon
Grandma's Boy
Tron
Nightmares: Bishop of Battle Chapter
Last Starfighter
Cloak & Dagger
House of the Dead
Resident Evil I+II
Pokemon
Alone in the Dark
Final Fanstasy
Mortal Kombat I+II
Street Fighter
Wing Commander
Tomb Raider
Joysticks
The Wizard
Super Mario Brothers
Wargames(maybe)
Krull
Doom

Also, if anyone can think of T.V. shows as well:
Pac-Man
Starcade
Dragon's Lair
Pokemon ::)

Don't forget Nightmares.

The second story 'Bishop of Battle', has a teenager (Emilio Estevez) who becomes so good at a video game, that the game comes to life to collect him.
What is that pappy?

You would be right if they were inspired by games/gaming....Those games were actually based on the Movie/franchise.  If we made a list of every game based on a movie/tv show, it would be a little long....Everything has a videogame tie-in nowadays...I wouldn't be suprised if Mary Kate & Ashley had a videogame tie-in to their awful films.

Wasn't the Krull game based on the movie as well? Or is my memory failing me in my old age?

Wow, I never knew there was a krull game, but a quick search I see it was Atari 2600 and it says on the cart "from the major motion picture"  so I'm guessing your correct, game based on movie.

TMNT started out as a comic. I would also like to point out that both April, and Baxter were African American in the original comics. Am I lame?

If you count more adult films, then Street F**ker is definitely needed on the list. :-\
Pinball Wizard is also in the category, but under "Alternative Lifestyles" if you know what I mean :-X

IIRC it was the first videogame/movie tie-in.  I felt this was significant from a historical gaming perspective.  Otherwise, we can just omit it from the list if you think it should be left off.

Krull is a 1983 movie, while E.T. was released in 1982, and as many people know by the infamous story, the Atari game was released in the Xmas of 1982... However, I don't think that E.T. is the first game based on a movie either, sure there are other earlier, less known ones. Tron and the first Tron game are from 1982 too. I find that lists like the one at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_based_on_movies) are a bit incomplete. For example, they don't include that Krull game  ;D

Am I lame?

I just about always think it's lame when people say African American instead of black, but whatcha gonna do?

Where did you get this from...Baxter was Black, but April wasn't...April first appeared in issue #2 as assistant to Baxter Stockman in the Mouser issue.
