OK. It has been four hours and I cannot find any ethernet controller drivers for my compaq. Here are some pertinent specs:

make = compaq presario
model = 6027us
processor = pentium 4 2 GHZ
mobo = Compaq 07e8h
chipset = intel i845g
onboard ethernet

I have been to hp and intel's web site and have found nothing. I googled it and every link lead back to hp.com I called hp tech support and they want 45 bucks to tell me where to get the drivers. Oh and they also informed me that I need to change my networking settings, WTF? The only site I found any reference to those specific drivers is driverguide.com After doing there registration and following all the steps I still can't login, it say I did not validate even though I have done this numerous times. I am about 5 seconds from just going and buying a pci ethernet card, which just makes me mad even thinking about it. So I decided to come to the omnipotent and omniscient BYOAC everything forum to be enlightened. <ridiculous droning noise>

Anyone who can helps me solve this quandary will receive an xbox 360(harpal issued) and a hearty pat on the back. You guys rock nuts!!!!

Let me start by saying thank you for trying to help, your xbox360 is on its way  >:D. I have actually been to that page numerous times. If you take a look, there are no ethernet drivers. Back to the drawing board.  :angry:

can't wait to recieve the 360. Anyway, XP should detect your NIC. Make sure its enabled in bios. How about removing it from device manager and refreshing it...

Only thing I can find was on driverguide and it's for XP, hope that's what you're running...

P.S. Change the file extension to .exe as usual
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

XP does detect the device, there is just simply no driver. I tried reinstalling using the XP cd as well as deleting the hardware through device manager and rebooting, they were both a no go. I finally got my registration to go through for driverguide.com and those drivers did work  :laugh: You would think HP would make drivers for there products a little more accessible, even if the product is 4 years old. What really irks me is that HP tech support would have taken my 45 dollars, changed a couple of my settings and when that didn't work they would have sent me awat claiming the mobo was bad or something. I really hate HP, I have had nothing but problems with there customer and software support  :hissy:

Thanks a lot for your suggestions guys  :cheers:

Down with HP!!!  :soapbox:

I hate all tech support.  But, for what it's worth, I needed NIC drivers yesterday for a DELL and their site only had the usual suspects (Win 98, 2000, NT, XP).  I needed NDIS DOS drivers so I could make a network boot disk for Symantec Ghost.  I opened up a chat session with a tech and she immediately linked me to the XP drivers I'd already seen on the site.  I told her that they were for XP and she said, download the file and unzip it and you'll see a folder in there with NDIS drivers.

I was fairly impressed.  This seems WAY beyond what the average PC tech support person would know, or even understand.  Most have probably never heard of DOS.
