Dos help needed!
« on: May 21, 2006, 08:05:58 am »
OK all, I know your gonna send me to search, but I already did that.
Also, I've checked the web and attemped a few things, but none are working.

I'm looking for instructions on how to set up drivers in dos.  Both mouse and soundcard.
I'm running an older machine that has win 98, but I'm running it in dos mode.  Trackball and SB soundcard work fine in win, but I can't get them working in dos.  Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Rick

you ned to find the DOS SOUND CARD drivers first (whats the model of your soundcard ?).
You can use CUTEMOUSE for mouse driver.

Cutemouse worked like a charm!  Big thanks!  I had tried some other mouse drivers with no success.

I think the problem with my soundcard is that it is a SoundBlaster 64.  I haven't been able to find dos drivers for it.  I tried using SB16 drivers, but it did not work.  Any help here is appreciated!

Ok, maybe it wasn't the drivers that are the problem. Tried the one Peale left (yeah I know...search harder) and it did not work.  The install of the drivers appeared to go well, but when I fire up mame and it asks for sound options and I choose "1 Soundblaster" it bombs out.  Must be something I'm missing.....suggestions?

BTW Peale - wife walked in while I was reading your post.  Saw zombie chick and started freaking, "what the hell web site are you on...?"... :laugh2:

Actually not a zombie, she's a dead chick (not that zombies aren't dead).  Was the chick that died in the beginning of "The Ring".

better post your config.sys and autoexec.bat.

Ok, before you laugh at me...I've never done anything in DOS before, except some very, very basic stuff.  I know what autoexec.bat and config.sys do (roughly) but have not configured them yet for use with the mame stuff.  I know I need to go add dpmi stuff, glaunch, etc.

But right now they are empty!  They have a bunch of rem statements and thats it.  Because you are asking about them, I assume that there should be something pointing to the sound drivers?  I guess I'm still missing the big picture about how devices work in dos....

I know ->  :lame:

Give this a quick read..

My guess is that you need to set the environment variables.

OK, so I had walked away from this whole thing because of frustration...

So tonight I decide I'm gonna get back at it!  I'm gonna get this puppy to give some sound.  It is, after all, the last hurdle in putting my whole machine together.  So I do a bunch of the stuff attempting to get the sound working and lo and behold I'm getting really close.  The only thing stopping me is the fact that my video and sound card are using the same I/O.  Other than that I should be in the clear.

Now it's been 10 years since I had to fudge with these settings, but I think I remember jumpers on the soundcard that will let you change I/O or IR or something, and I think maybe this will help.  I pop the case and realize (and I should have realized this about a month ago) that the sound card is actually on the mother board.   :censored:

So I think to myself, "self, you have another video card, maybe if you switch it out the issue will be resolved".  Yes, I'm a tool!   :tool:

So I switch the card, get the Gateway splash screen and then...nothing but this:
LI_

No matter what I do - the friggin system just keeps beeping at me and nothing else happens!  What the &%&*#!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, so what now....Honestly, I'm ready to chuck this box and buy one that can actually run windows with mame so I don't have to deal with all this crap!

Ideas!  Its 1am and I'm going to bed.  I may wake up in the middle of the night and pull a "Office Space/Fax Machine" number on this @#$@#$ system!

EDIT:  Oh, just realized it's only 12:30...maybe I'll hack around some more...

That's weird...looks like LiLo was installed or something.  Were you using this as a Linux box in the past?

No, nothing like that.  This was given to me by the neighbor when I set up her new machine.  All she ever does is check email and she would have no idea how to do anything like setting up a dual boot system.  I wonder if Gateway has some sort of setup in there...they are using their own splash screens and status displays...

I think I'm hosed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :hissy:

The Gateway display should be in the BIOS itself.

Weird that it's not using Lilo...that looks *just* like a horked Lilo install.

To be absolutely sure, go to the prompt and:

C:\ > fdisk /mbr

I gave up.  Got a pc coming with enough umph to run mame under windows.  Then I can put in the frontend I wanted etc.  I have been beaten by DOS....and yes I am ashamed to admit it.

No where in your previous posts do you mention setting the soundcard options in the autoexec.bat.  As far as I know, YOU MUST set those, that's what tells DOS what IRQ, etc. to use for that device.  I'm just concerned b/c you said you've tried so much but haven't set up Autoexec.bat/Config.sys for "dpmi, frontend, etc.." but it is much more than that.  That's WHERE you get it going, so I'm not sure what you were doing (unless you were testing but never setting it)?

I may be way off here, but if you haven't checked the BYOAC Wiki, here's a link to a website that pretty much lays it all out for you step by step:

http://www.mameworld.net/dosmame/

If you don't want to go DOS, that's you choice...but it certainly isn't "too tough" to get going.

Good Luck.

I followed the instructions for setting the sound card up in dos including the autoexec.bat and config.sys.  I was right on the verge of success (drivers appeared to be loading) when I finally messed my system up.  My soundcard and videocard were set to use the same I/O.

Soundcard was integrated with the MB and I couldn't figure out how to change the I/O.  So then I tried changing out vid cards.  That's when everything went haywire...  Changed vid back but still haywire.  Don't know what happened but I screwed something up.

It's been years since I had to mess with all this himem, I/O, DMA, etc garbage...and I had forgotten how frustrating it could be.  :dizzy:

Windows had my soundcard listed as a SB64 PCI...it wasn't until later that I realized it was actually on the MB.  I should have realized this earlier, but I was reaching my frustration point and well, I get stupid at that point sometimes.

Like I said, I give up on this machine.  I'm going to the dark side with a lot more horsepower - then I can run some more of the things I wanted since the start of all this.  Hmmm....maybe I was subconsciously looking for an excuse to buy a more powerful box... >:D
