WG D9200 sticky wannabe

Folks,

I am trying to assemble here the majority of useful and up-to-date information about the the Wells Gardner d9200 monitor.   This seems to be the most popular monitor for most of us.  There seems to be a lot of theories out there, with a few people (including myself) actually contacting WG and getting seemingly contradictory information.   This contradictory information centers around the monitor's ability to handle a 800x600 resolution.  Also, there are two versions that might work for MAMErs:


27 Inch D9200 Digital Monitor - Universal (15/25/31 KHZ) (part no. WGM2792-U0TS42A)
27" D9200 (31KHZ / 38KHZ) (part no. WGM2792-UOTS19C)

the 3rd model is only for the Golden Tee Golf games and therefore I assume it is not an option.

My confusion started when I posted about this a few days ago but I will copy it here:

Below is a quote from an email I received from Wells Gardner:

"... TO ANSWER YOU ABOUT THE D9200 MONITOR. ONLY CERTAIN MODELS CAN HANDLE THE 800X600 RES. THOSE MODELS ARE THE WGM2792- S19C OR THE 53D OR THE 08E OR THE53E."

... so much for "unofficial" support.  This sounds fairly "official" to me.  I called and spoke to the guy who sent me the information for more clarification, because I saw this on the website when I searched for the above part number(WGM2792- S19C):

"This monitor is setup to run in frequencies
31 khz and 38 khz.
This monitor can be adjusted manually to run in
15khz and 25 khz also."

so I asked him if this monitor could still handle the 15kHz and 25kHz modes, and he said "oh yeah, no problem".

That's great news. I just spoke with WellsGardner and they confirmed 800x600 is now officially one of the supported resolutions and will be reflected in their new spec sheet (not yet available.)

QUESTION #1: pixelhugger, I assume you specifically asked about the 31/38 kHz model (w/ part number ending in 19C) when you spoke to WG?



Most of us want the old games to look perfect. I was worried when I read this from post (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=36031.0):

I called WG and asked them this.

They told me their 19c is just a big PC monitor. 

The 42a (which I bought) supports games with a lower hz.  The arcadeVGA card with this works nicely.

QUESTION #2: Buschmaster, do you mean to imply that WG told you (or you inferred) that old resolutions will not look right on the 19c?



then there's the refresh rate question in 800x600 mode, which I assume was written about the original (part number ending in 42a) monitor (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=23098.0):

Personally I don't run at 800x600 but I did test it out.  What vertical refresh are you running at?  According to Wells Gardner it will run at 54Hz and that is why it is not advertised because it won't run at 60Hz.  I did notice however mine would sync at 60Hz.  So perhaps if it isn't already set to 54, give it a try, it may not like 60Hz.

QUESTION #3: whammoed (thanks for all the help lately), is this "According to Wells Gardner it will run at 54Hz" information supposed to be about the original (42a) model number?

and another from that same post thread:

Running a standard windows 800x600 resolution can seriously shorten your D9200's lifespan.  Only the newer models support this resolution.

QUESTION #4: desmatic, when you say "newer" - does that mean a D9200 with part number ending in 42a that was manufactured recently, or are you referring to the model whose part number ends in 19c?  If the former, did you get the info from WG and can you expand on this?

I spoke to my contact at WG today, Jeff Gardner. He tells me that the monitor does indeed support 800x600. If fact they can "tune" it for me so it is setup one of two ways, VGA/SVGA or VGA/EGA/CGA.

QUESTION #5: John (jcrouse), did you end up getting a d9200?  If so, did you have to choose between these 2 options?

QUESTION #6: I assume once this choice is made, you would have to physically change some thing(s) on the monitor to switch to the other, and would therefore make it impractical in a finished cabinet to allow all frequencies on this monitor?

QUESTION #7: What model number was this - 42a or 19c?

QUESTION #9: Did anyone get the 19C model?  If so, are you running it in 15kHz mode and how does it look?

QUESTION #11:  has anyone damaged their d9200 by running it in 800x600 resolution?  If so, please post details, including (at least): refresh rate that did the deed, what broke, what the cost to repair was, and what model number (I assume 42a).  Maybe what video card also.

Comment:  Since I would like this to be a wg d9200 sticky, please if you have any other info about this monitor that other users should know, please post.  Not that you needed my permission of course

No, I wasn't even aware of the different model numbers. I just asked about the D9200 in general and was told the 800x600 res was supported. They gave no disclaimer or exception. Though it sounded like it was a "now supported" change, so maybe older models are not included.

I was told by WG that the 19c is pretty much a large TV with better resolution.  They started making it because they had several requests to make them.  The 42a with the arcade VGA card allows me to run games at their orginally intended settings.  They do look so good on the monitor.  The 19c just cuts it down to 31/38.  Basically if you are going to spend the money buying one you are better off with the 42a.

I bought the 42a.  I had a friend just buy a TV.  42a looks much nicer, but it costs hundreds more for it to look nicer. 

The TV is far easier to install into a cab then the 42a.  The 42a will break your back.

Hope this helps and if you do buy one of their monitors buy a better monitor cable then what it comes with.  The cable sucks.

I did WG standard shipping that they offer and there was no problem with it at all.  Just make sure you run the monitor test programs once you get it hooked up to check for dead spots and other stuff that could have gotten messed up in shipping.  Mine was fine, but I've read about others having problems.  WG was helpful with all the questions I had.

... is that 800x600 resolution in that pic?  If so:
   What refresh rate? 60 Hz or something else?
   Do you run it that way often (like for your fe, etc)...?
   Have you had any problems w/ this resolution?

when did you buy your 42a?  do you still have the scrolling line/ground problem you discussed in this post:

If not, what fixed it?  If so, what have you tried unsuccessfully?
