WG D9200 31/38khz question
« on: April 28, 2005, 12:38:04 pm »
I was browsing through the WG catalogue online, and noticed this guy here:

http://www.wellsgardner.com/wellsgardner31/finditem.cfm?itemid=1600

It says specifically that it's meant to run 31/38khz (hurray for an 800x600 FE!), and that it can MANUALLY be configured for 15/25khz.

The question I have is, does this mean that every time it wants to go to 15/25khz I have to manually switch something over? Or does it mean that by making a manual change from the get-go, it will allow 15/25/31/38 to all be available automatically as required?

This option interests me as I'd like to avoid running into the Beston monitor issues people are discovering, while still having the option of hitting 800x600 "officially" unlike the other D9200.

Thanks,
- FA

I called WG and asked them this.

They told me their 19c is just a big PC monitor.

The 42a (which I bought) supports games with a lower hz.  The arcadeVGA card with this works nicely.

Ya, unfortuneately, I believe so.  At least when I enquired about it some time ago, they said ya.  I doubt anything has changed.

Remember that there is no picture difference between 15 and 31 KHz on the same monitor. If the monitor got an "arcade" like tube the games will look great at 31KHz.
Look at the comparison between 15 and 31KHz on this page http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/avga2.html

Which is a pretty big difference in my opinion.

Yeah. My goal is to have the older games look as authentic as possible, but at the same time allow for higher-resolution FEs.  I guess one could assume that I'm shopping for the holy grail of arcade monitors. :)  I'll need to weigh the pros and cons of both the Betson and WGD9200 monitors, and decide between the two... I have a feeling that for what I want, those are my only 2 options.

Did you look at the comparison pictures on the retroblast site?

I can agree that the pictures differ slightly in intensity and size (which can easily be corrected) but different scanline size?

Trust me.  The scanline size is noticeably different.  You can try and emulate it with software effects, but I only know of one that is truely accurate, svgalib doublescanned modes in AdvanceMAME.
