Dodgeball: WIP, need advice
« on: November 25, 2005, 09:59:41 pm »
OK, after two years of lurking on these boards I am finally starting my first project.

I am building a two person standup cab. The theme is "Dodgeball" from the movie. My sons idea and the more I worked on it, the more I liked it.

I am looking for some advice and critism on the look and layout of my CP. I am fairly happy with the marquee.

I am trying to keep a simple look that is clean but fun.
I worked on the designs, the backgrounds are different.
I kinda want a look of the two teams as players one and two. Average Joes is yellow and red, and Globo Gym is Purple, white and black.
Should I keep the primary colors Red, White and Black?
The cab is black with red t-moulding.

What do you think? It's so hard working on your own stuff sometimes... :-\

The following pics are the marquee and three different control panels.

Very cool theme. You've done a great job with the artwork too. I love the weathered look of the logos on the flooring. That's impressive! I prefer the first or second control panel overlay.

Thanks for the comments.

Actually that last "Globo Gym" logo came right from the website.
I am working on vectorizing now.

The website had the worn gym floor as most of the backgrounds. I actually thought of using real flooring for the side of the cab. But then I figured it would be harder to change themes down the road...

I did use the floor background in my Mamewah layout.
And of course I HAD to use "Patches O'Houliham" for the Classsics!

Well I never expected a Dogeball themed cabinet...this is definitely creative.

And CP #2 with the woodgrain floor.  That one is definitely the best.

CP 2 all the way.  The hard wood floor looks sweet.

Interesting.

Not to be too nitpicky, but the trackball quote should be
"If you can dodge a wrench..."
"...you can dodge a ball"

The bottom part doesn't look like a continuation of the quote otherwise.

"Ahh Touche!"

I will correct that typo.
And it looks like the wood floor is the winner.

Thanks, the floorboard shown is actually from the dodgeball website. The image is small (800 x 600) so making it fit a 28" x 10" CP will distort it.

I took pics of the hardwood floors in my house and a coffee table I have. Will have to see how those look. I kinda like the weathered look of the floor, it's a nice contrast to the sharper graphics on the controls.

I may even take some pics of the floors in my kids gym's, can't be more authentic than that. Otherwise I will have to find a Photoshop effect to weather my floor pics.

If you're looking for really hig-resolution floor board images, I'd recommend checking out "3D modelling" websites. Textures for 3D graphics are usually really high res and repeat without seams.

I'll check my files for some...

Thanks for looking RayB.

I will do some more searching online, I found some of the 3D modeling sites, just need to find some free stuff or work on my pics...

I found a pic of flooring and set it to the background for my CP.

I think it looks ok, will have to try some other pics I took of some floors.
The issue now is that I decided to make the CP look like a dodgeball court.
I watched the movie again and the floor in the competition is Black.

The other issue is the width of floor boards. If I try to make things to scale the floorboard spacing will be very small.

I think I will have to make some comprimises to make it look good.
The cab is all black with red t-moulding, so I do not want a black CP.

I thought about making the admin button area the grandstands with the crowd in it, but it would be too busy. Does it look too busy as it is now? (I know I will hear from the admin-button-haters...)

Let me know what you think.

Thanks for looking

i'm not sure that your movie theme is a good idea.  i'm not saying to change everything, but, for example, while the simpsons is a pop-culture thing, it's got a game tie-in that will allow it to stand the test of time.  why not tie in your idea to a dodgeball game, like nes superdodgeball?  i used to play it as a kid and it's great.

you could still keep your dodgeball quotes, since they're funny without the movie tie-in, but at least in 5 years people wouldn't be wondering what your cab was all about.

anyway, just wanted to give my two cents.  the sideart and cp are still great, but i'd make it apparent that it's average joes vs the cobras.

EDIT: i had a better post, but it got erased somehow, so this is a summary of the original...don't you hate it when that happens?

Flinkly,

Ya who knows if anyone will remember the movie in five years...
Me and the kids like the movie alot, and once everything is together, it will all tie in.

I am working on video and audio clips right now. I have the movie loaded into the PC also. So you can watch the movie anytime you want, or check out the funny scenes, bloopers, Easter Eggs, etc.

I had thought about making the marquee "Average Joe's Vs. Globo Gym". But I like the way the Dodgeball text looked as a marquee.
I am still working on the CP, maybe I will put the "Average Joe's Vs. Globo Gym" text on the front edge.

If in a few years I don't like it, I can always just change the artwork...

Theme and artwork look great!!!  My only advice would be to maybe play around with having the ADAA a little bit smaller.  It kinda feels cluttered in that area.

Cheers

Ya, that's something I struggled with.
I created the logo as seen in the movie. It matches the scale and the key item was the red trackball in the top of the logo.
It seems like a perfect match for the trackball.
If I make it smaller, than the logo is cut off. Right not it is tucked under the Globo Gym joystick artwork.

I could make the joystick artwork smaller or shrink and move the ADAA logo up and create different artwork for the trackball.

In an older revision I hade the text "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball" running around the trackball.

I still want to keep a clean neat apperance to the CP. I had a bunch of text and pics before and it looked too confusing.

Maybe I am back down to about 95% done....
