OK. I just saw this game in GamePro mag last night and I must say that this is my next purchase. I has been getting good reviews and anything that lets you play Symphony of Destruction is a must purchase in my book.

My PS2 cab doesn't have a theme yet, but this may be it.

It is definetly on top of my list when the PAL version is announced. I loved Amplitude, to have the same experience with a gibson in hand would be great!

You do realize it's just a plastic guitar shaped controller with about 5 buttons, yes?  That's all it is.

Not really.  The buttons are just buttons, but try to mimic the strum bar and whammy bar with a button press... kinda kills the feeling of the game.

I definitely want to pick this up.

That's like saying a "you realize a 360 steering wheel is just a spinner".

Which would you rather use for a racing game, a small spinner or something that looks like a steering wheel.

Unless you are responding to the "to have the same experience with a gibson in hand would be great" comment.
Yeah, it;s a plastic guitar, not a gibson :)

What I meant is the "game experience" of the game Amplitude is great - once you're in the flow of the music, it is hard to stop playing. To have a game like that, but with a guitar, would be awesome.

So: yes, I know it is a plastic guitar. To play a game like Amplitude with a guitar controller would rock. (is that better phrased?)

My local Best Buy doesn't have any in stock. I am going to have to drive about an hour away to pick one up. I have about $600 in rewards coupons so I want to buy it from them and get it for FREE.

Hopefully I can get mine by this weekend.

I'm DLin the "trial" version now and if it works on my PS2 I'm going to buy the guitar from redoctane when they're available seperatly.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Liksang has an aftermarket guitar they sell. I thought about doing the same, but I figured I only buy 1 in 50 games I play.

Note that the game only works with the Red Octane controller. The Guitar controller at Lik-Sang is meant for the Konami game "Guitar Freaks".

As far as I know the Red Octane guitar isn't sold seperately  :( There is also 2 player bundle (game + 2 controllers) available from the Red Octane website, if you want 2 player guitar battles...

Does anyone know if the GuitarHero's guitar will work with the Kanomi Guitar Freaks games?

I think not: the Guitar Freak version uses 6 fret buttons and the Guitar Hero version only 5.

I'm very anxious to try this thing out.  I played a bunch of those songs in my band, so it will be cool to see how close they came to porting guitar playing to a game.

If I had to guess, Smoke on the Water has to be the very first beginner song you start with in the basement.

I think what I saw was the Konomi game at a local Game Crazy.  Anyway, it was hooked up and an employee was playing it.  The guitar looked like a Fisher Price toy, but still looked like a lot of fun to play.  The whole thing seemed like it would become boring pretty quickly when the novelty wore off.  Something about it seemed less compelling than a DDR game, even though it is essentially just DDR for the fingers.

From what I understand, the guitar in guitar hero is modelled after a real gibson guitar and does not have the plastic feel of the guitar freak controller. At least that is what I have read in reviews (IGN etc.). The guitar hero game seems to have more depth since it does also feature a whammy-bar, hammer-ons and pull-off moves.

Guitar Hero left - Guitar Freaks right (pic from DDR freak forum)

In some forums people mention that it is very close to playing a real guitar. However those are on Guitar Heroes own forums and on IGN forums so it is hard to tell wether is it biased or fanboyizm.

So that is why I am interested in a BYOAC forum members review, since I feel we look diffently at games (ie. not easily distracted by pretty visuals and gimmickery).

Yep

And the models in the game are all gibsons.  Les Paul, Flying V, X-plorer ...

I wish they'd add a bass player level :)

Here's my mini-review:

Controller:
Not bad.  (Besides being a Gibson, lol)  I wish there was a little more "meat" in the nexk.  It feels very plastic-y and hollow.  I'm afraid when I get to the expert level, I might torque the neck right in two.  The neck buttons feel ok, but only time will tell how they hold up.  The strum bar is noisy (click click), but we are all used to clicks :).  I suppose a P360 version of the controller is out of the question.  Wammy bar is a nice touch.  Although its set only to "dive", I'd like to be able to bend it backwards to get the Steve Vai-esque trills.

Game Play:
So far so good.  I started the game up, created my game save, and went through one of the 3 tutorials.  That was enough to get me started.  I went into career mode, and started playing the "Easy Level".  There are 4 levels that I suppose you will have to complete, all having the same songs, just progressively harder versions of them.  I can tell you that the difference between the easiest and hardest level of the same song is quite significant.  The gameplay does not speed up, just your involvement in the song increases.  I used the song "Thunderkiss 69" as a test on all four levels of difficulty, since I already knew how to play the song on real guitar.  Even at the easierst level of play, it gives you a sensation of actually playing parts of the song.  At the hardest, you are moving chords up and down the neck, and playing fast solos.  I was quite suprised to play the WHOLE song of each of the songs included.  This could easily lead to finger fatigue.  This is obviously geared for the home console market, since arcade games are not big money makers when 1 song = 4-5 minutes.

Interface:
Very easy to navigate with the controller.  There is a good amount of humor in the game, including the tutorial0guy's stories of being a roadie, and the "Loading" screen tips and hints (like: "Don't let your drummer handle the money", that one had me cracking up)

Overall the game is great.  I really enjoy it, and I wish I had some way of testing the 2 player battles right now.  Te only thing right now that I think could improve the realism would be a controller with 2 rows of buttons, like having multiple strings.  Perhaps 2 rows of 4 buttons would be ideal.  I guess that would be a little trickier to depict on the rhythm-game interface.  Thankfully the game has a very non-Japanese feel to it.  (Not that I have anything against the country, I just hate that they have all the good games, and sometimes don't port them over to english).

If you have any other questions about the game, let me know.

That's why it costs $1 to play.
for a 1.5 minute version of the song too.

The game hasn't arrived in Canada yet and it appears the launch date keeps moving.  Apparently ALOT of people have been asking for the game at my local EB, so I pre-ordered it.  I will give a review whenever I get it.

Does anyone know if you can purchase the guitar separately?

I have not seen it yet.  The fact that they have 2 player support tells me they will eventually sell them seperately.  But for now, the best I've seen is the 2 player packs on ebay.

For me, no one I know would want to play against me, so I'm content playing with myself (that didn't sound right!)

I was finally able to pick up Guitar Hero over the weekend. Let me tell you it is all that is cracked up to be. Apparently Best Buy is having a hard time keep these in stock. They have even put them in an obsure location to see if they can sell less before one of their big ads comes out, but they are still being purchased.

I'm seriously thinking of making my PS2 cab a Guiter Hero themed cab. This week I'm starting on the artwork and shortly I'll be buying another guitar controller. I really hope Red Octane releases more games for use with this controller.

If this is not on your x-mas list them you better add it or you are missing out.

Arcade version?

Guitar Hero or guitar freaks?

Similar, but different games, made by different developers.

I guess the point would carry over to both games though.

Too bad this isn't on Xbox, with more songs for d/l over Xbox Live.

The point is indentical for either game, except that if your arcade is good at keeping content up, you can have hundreds of songs on the cab... though 90% of them are Japanese barely guitar songs.
