I wouldn't be surprised to see homebrew songs out there at some point that you can burn and use on a hacked console, though.

Well, this is just a ps2 controller.  So it should be seen by a ps2 to usb convertor, perhaps.
Then it would just be adding a new supported game format to stepmania.

There isn't that big of a homebrew scene for Stepmania.  As I've been looking for some homebrew songs and can't find any good ones.

There is many hombrew stuff for stepmania.  Start looking at DDR forums, you can start at ddrmaniax.  Start at their forums and start following links.  Enjoy.

Just remember stepmania supports many formats.  So stuff that works with programs like DWI will work with stepmania.

Finally picked the Guitar Heros bundle from my local EB today.  And I have to say its an EXCELLENT game!!  All the positive reviews out there are correct.  Its a fun and addictive game.  I've been playing it for the past 3 hours.  Going to be ordering another guitar for multiplayer action for sure!!!

i asked someone who works at gamecrazy if there is even a chance for downloadabel content and he said no but there will be a second out some like maybe in feb or march.  i played at my local bestbuy and got my friend addicted so he will buy it for christmas.  i just need to get him to get the bundle for 2 players.  We were actually going to go back to bestbuy for an hour just to play guitar hero.

Just a thought, but has anyone considered building a custom controller for this game?  Like make a guitar that is more life size and has more weight to it?

On the Guitar Heros official forum, some one made a controller out of a toy elmo guitar.

i was thinking of hacking a ps2 controller and placing it into a toy guitar only for cost benefits.  charging 40 usd for an extra controller is a little much.  but chad is right i dont think any other controller could replace the current ones.

Chad, I can't help but pick up on a whiff of distaste coming from you in relation to this game.  Are you being funded by the National Drummer Association of America or something? ;D  It is humurous to read a couple great comments about the game then there is one from you with something crappy.  I couldn't stop laughing as I continued down the thread. ;D  Keep up the good work.  Oh yeah, I played this over the New Years and it is an awesome game.  It will be the first console game I will have bought in a couple years.  Now it is your turn. ;)

The "Rock meter will always stay green" code is a very nice thing to have. It essentially gives this game a MUCH needed practice mode, and it is nice that Harmonix made it so you can't save if you use them.

My biggest issue with it will be the same as the home based DDRs... you pay $80 for a game and controller and get 15 songs. Once those songs are done, so is the game, and thus far they have not come out with much extensibility to any of the commercial Bemanistyle home games.

Actually...

You pay $70 for the game & controller, and you get 47 songs.

Also... What do you mean by "Once those songs are done"?

A person could just do the bare minimum to make it through the songs, and progress through the actual game rather easily (easy being a relative term), or they could actually try and perform the song as perfect as possible.

These are like games of old for me.

I didn't play Pac-Man to get to that great next level. I played it to best my or others high scores.

It is the same with Guitar Hero (and games like). I try and perform them better and better. I am not happy with a 3 star 80% rating. I want 100% (or as close as I can get), and a 5 star rating, and I want that rating on expert.

The play time that it is going to take to get what I want is far more than most other games offer up these days. Yeah Guitar Hero cost more. So what? You are paying for an unbelievably AWESOME experience, and that experience requires that you have the special controller (the game does not, but the experience certainly does). I will gladly pay the extra bit required for that extra bit of immersion that such controllers add.

I picked up the game last night and have been addicted to it since.  I've already played all the way through easy and medium (excluding the unlocked songs) and am a few songs into hard.  That last song on medium difficulty (the ozzy osborne one) is ridiculously hard, I must have tried it a dozen times, but I finally just now got it.  One thing about the game is it is really satisfying when you nail one of the songs, you really do feel like your playing the guitar.

Awesome Game.

I can't friggin wait till my guitar comes!  I ordered it on Friday so it should be here sometime before the end of the week.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I got to try it out.  I noticed something about easy mode.  Most of the time it is following the bassline, especially in iron man.  It follows the well known guitar licks but during solos and such it tends to follow the bass.  That's kinda cool.  Once you realize that you know what to listen for.

That game really has impressed the heck out of me. The only thing I didn't like was that the controller felt tiny and I felt like I was wrestling with it. Maybe I'm just used to playing full scale guitars, hence why I really want to try making a homebrew controller using an old busted up guitar.

You oughtta check out the official forums for the game.

There is a lot of modding going on around there, but the one that would no doubt interest you the most, is this one:

Yeah, he took the guts out of an original controller and transfered them. I was thinking of a way to do this on a real tight budget and using the existing stratocaster hardware, probably not going to happen until I get my hands on an existing controller to inspect it.

Thanks a ton for the link!

Getting good buttons to use for the frets might prove to be difficult, but everything else should be simple enough.

To get a regular controller to be recognized as a guitar controller, you just hold left on the d-pad. Other than that one thing, it would be very little different from hacking a controller for use with arcade controls, which we do quite regularly round these here parts. :)

Actually...

The tremelo may take a little creativity, since it is the analog stick, but I am sure it could be done without too much effort.

What do you think for the tremolo? For the actual game is one of the analog joysticks used for the whammy bar? Because I mean, I could possibly figure a way to mount the analog stick to the spring loaded whammy bar, so as you move the tremolo, the back end would them move the analog stick...

The strumming button has me confused...is it some sort of toggle switch or an actual button?

Thanks!

Anyone beat every song on expert yet?  I've finished them all except the last 2, now I'm just going back to hard difficulty and getting 4-5 stars on each song, hopefully I'll eventually get good enough to beat those last 2.  Its amazing how you get so much better at this game the more you play.  I remember thinking I'd never make it through all the songs on hard, but now I can get 4-5 stars on most of the hard songs.  Fun stuff.

Heh ya.  To expand on what I meant, the progression of the difficulty of the songs is set up perfect so that your skill level is almost always exactly good enough to beat that song, with each song getting slightly harder (with the exception of the last couple songs which seem to jump in difficulty).  I didn't realize how good I was getting until I went back and played on the easier difficulty, playing on medium now feels like I'm playing in slow motion.  I still haven't beaten the last 2 songs on expert, but then I havent tried since I last posted, I've just been going back and trying to get 5 stars on all the hard difficulty songs.
