Blurry Donkey Kong monitor
« on: November 09, 2005, 11:08:03 am »
Hi all, just found this forum and have a question about my Donkey Kong Sanyo monitor. When I first got the game it was folded over on the left side. I paid someone to do a cap kit and the foldover was gone but the monitor was a little blurry. When he did the caps he only replaced about 4-5 that he said needed replacement. His explanation for the blurriness was that the tube was weak. I replaced the tube and at first it was alot clearer but it has been getting increasingly blurrier. Any ideas what is wrong? Thanks for any advice.

silly question.... have you tried adjusting the focus control on the flyback transformer (the one that the big red wire goes to... sorry if you already knew this... I always assume that people know nothing when they are new on here)

there are usually 2 controls on there one marked screen and one marked focus.

Bog standard safety warning.......
there are dangerous voltages inside your monitor... especialy around the anode connection on the tube (the bit that looks like a suction cup) and around the flyback transformer (the bit on the opposite end of the wire to the suction cap)
Please read around this forum for advice on unsafe bits of monitors etc and if you are still not sure ASK

I should have mentioned that turning the focus knob fully to the right gives the best focus but never completely clear. Is it possible I need a new flyback transformer?

Why in the world would someone only replace 4 or 5 capacitors once they went through the trouble of discharging a monitor?

I mean, it's just a couple of more to do...

Anyway, find another tech to re-do the cap kit [read] COMPLETE cap kit.

BTW, they are easy to do.

The proper capkit for this monitor includes 16 electrolytic capacitors. Whoever worked on the monitor before should have done a FULL kit and not half-assed it.

It's possible the tube might have been weak, but your tech should have put it on a rejuvenator to fix it.

It is also possible that the other tube you put in may have gone bad. It's also a possibility that the flyback is going bad, but replacements are available from arcadeshop.com

I have the complete chassis from the monitor I took the tube out of. Can I take the flyback from that one and switch it to the monitor in the game or do I need to buy a new replacement? Looks like I got screwed on the cap kit installation.

If they are the same make/model you can swap the flybacks.

It involves unsoldering it from the main board and the focus/screen wires from the neckboard.
