I think on the one hand that's great as the reasoning behind not including them has always been a stupid one.  Also I'm all about preservation.  Years from now people might find these primitave coin-op devices interesting.  On the other hand money is the key element of fun in gambling games and since the rom doesn't come with a bucket of quarters and the games themselves suck, who cares?

On the bright side, this means that eventually merit touch games might find their way into mame.  I doubt anytime soon as they are still popular and used in bars, but still.

Personally, I enjoy some video slot machines, and I enjoy them for the game itself, not the prospect of winning money.  Some of the bonus rounds are a hoot.

I do wish that at some point we'll see emulation for some of these machines, since they technically could suffer the same fate as older arcade machines.  I heard through the grapevine that Sigma (a slot manufacturer) have closed up shop, which means that one of the favorites I played in Atlantic City (Clue) will get harder and harder to find now.

I would definately play games like Cleopatra, Super Cherry, Lobstermania, The Price is Right, The $50,000 Pyramid, etc etc without the need to play for money.

Well those are modern gambling games. 

Take a look at the crap-tacular 1984 vintage that was added to mame.  The main reason they included them (I think, don't hold me to this) is that their hardware is very similar to the trivia games in mame and they were already added several versions ago and promptly removed.  Although I'm sure eventually more modern slots/poker will get into mame, I don't see it happening anytime soon because in many cases with would require the emulation of new processors into the mame core.  Since video games can be dumped cheaply and even older slots hold their value, it's going to be hard for the guru to get ahold of slots/vpms  to dump and figure out the hardware, for that matter.

Well those are great and all, but my guess is they are simulated, not emulated.  Also my guess is those cd collections require extensive use of the mouse... in other words they are useless on most mame cabinets.

I am thinking about a gambling cabinet also.  Happ does sell the rectangular buttons that are common on video poker/slots.  I wonder how universal the button name/pattern would need to be to play the gambling games.  There usually was a MAXBET, HIT, STAND, BETONE, DEAL and another button or two.

why are there so many people that hate the idea of fruit machine emulation...just because you cannot win the actual money (therefore making it boring).

I've actually never had a thing for fruit machines in arcades, never seen the fun of putting coin after coin in and the only fun being a button press or 2, and am not willing to spend a fortune to 'learn the machine' - however I still see the idea of them being emulated as fun etc in the same way as all the other emulations.  After all, in an arcade game, it doesn't spit out the points for you to keep and take home...instead you get a high score....likewise in a fruit machine the challenge of a score is a monetary amount and some, perhaps even more, pride could be attained from thinking "ooh I could've won 520 quid here", or "dammit I lost
