METALLICADE - REVIVED!!
« on: August 02, 2005, 03:26:10 pm »
I have finally found the time to start a thread to document my slow conversion of an old Food Fight cab I picked up at CoinOpWarehouse.

It was previously converted to a Killer Instinct cab, with a Jamma hookup and 19" Wells Gardner monitor.

So far, I've stripped the two sides down, and have started to sand.

I have not decided yet if I will prime/paint the sides or get some black pica from Happs.

As you can probably tell from the name of the project, the theme will be Metallica (pre-napster incident, lol).

Right now, I'm planning black cab with red T-molding.  I have red sticks and buttons to replace the somewhat tired blue ones installed now.

Here's a WIP marquee.  I'm pretty happy with how its looking so far.  Let me know what you think.

More to follow later...

I'll include some info about my paint stripping experience, just in case it helps someone.

As some of you know, these Atari cabs are HEAVY!.  Moving this thing once I got it home has not really been an option.  So when it came time to strip the paint, I needed to find something that I could use inside without dangerous fumes, etc.

I asked around, and came up with a product called Citristrip.  Its citrus based (duh!) and made for indoor kitchen cabinet.  No dangerous fumes, and it had good vertical hold.  Seemed perfect for 'an indoor cabinet'

The first side was a PITA!  I followed the directions, but it took forever to scrape the paint off.  I knew if I used a regular type of stripper, it would have been faster, but I did what I had to.

On the second side, I piled the stuff on THICK.  This seemed to work much better.  I let it sit 1-3 hours, and it peeled much better.  Only the drier parts needed extra work to remove.

Here's a picture of what I mean by think.  The picture may not show very well, but hopefully you can tell by the texture what I mean.  One bottle of the stuff did both sides.

(never mind the quarter holder, thats not really stuck on there, I was just playing with it)

Next on the list to do:

New sticks/buttons
I've got some red sticks and red/black/white buttons to swap out the old blue ones.

New CPO
Working on some artwork in my spare time

De-case my computer
The computer I had set aside for this project will not fit inside the cab, so I am going to de-case the mobo, power supply and hard drive and mount them inside.

Finalize marquee artwork and get it printed.

Finish software stuff
I've got Mamewah setup with a few different screens.  I need to make some for the console emus.

THe machine is now in my living room, so the dirty work is done.  Now its just taking the list one by one and finishing it off.

i'm suprised you haven't been hunted down yet.  burgertime cabinets are quite loved here in the forums, although yours didn't have any original artwork or game materials.  still...

as for the conversion, it is looking great so far except the tell-tale burgertime cutout at the top.  just keep an eye out for angry byoac'ers

Looks like it was a Food Fight (as stated in first post), not a Burger Time..  And, from the looks of it, was 'mangled' already...

I like it much better now than with the KI artwork in the first post  :)

Yup.  Food Fight it was.  With no salvageable side art at all.  I did decide to keep the wacko shape instead of straightening it or something.

Looks cool Stobe, but why no Metallica-style font?

I went through all the Metallica styled fonts and decided on the Anger style.  I am a much bigger old-school Metallica fan, but the classic font just looked a little funny when I was playing with it.

I'm still toying with the side art and CPO, etc.  I might bring some old school in there.  (How I'd love to use the 'Metal Up Your --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules--' T-shirt graphic!) (See also: toilet with knife coming out of the bowl)
