Who here is a Geek?
« on: June 24, 2005, 01:29:34 pm »
Who among us are self-confessed geeks? Come on, time to get out of the closet!

RayB raises hand.

I'd have a problem being called a NERD. But geek, it's more a "techy" person without the dorkwad qualities of a nerd.  :D

My qualifications for geekdom:-

I own 6 working PC's all doing something
I saw episode 3 at the midnight showing
I know the 25 digit windows xp code by memory
My favourite channel is the discovery channel
I can't sleep at night when I can't get something to work how I want it.
People phone me for answers for pub quizzes
I choose a car by functionality and not looks

etc etc etc

but most importantly my wife calls me one, and I've learned that she is always right!

A lot of those apply to me, though my junior high didn't even have computers, nevermind a network.

What are Star Miniatures?

I don't think chads the type o' guy I would say that to.

Actually, he's the type of guy who generally did, over and over and over again until it made him feel better about being dumb and ugly and unpopular.

Of course, usually I'm bigger than those guys now whereas I was half their size then.  So I don't hear it often anymore.  It's one of those sore spots a lot of people have from childhood bullying, etc.

Well,  that and I'm not the type of person who would call people names anyways.

(I changed that. it looked like I was calling someone something without intending on doing so. sorry)

Hey, no one's angry, we're having a discussion.  :)

I fully admit that I have geeky tendencies, but have enough nongeeky tendencies that I'm not sure I am a fullblown geek.

Console collection - large
Comic book collection - one box of books I bought at a clearance rack to read when I was sick one week

I don't know what half the things that have been mentioned are...

I have 85% of a CmpSci degree and a job in the field.

I have many PCs and parts in my house, but then again, it's free stuff related to the preceding item so it may not count.  Everyone loves free stuff.

I am definitely a guy people call when they need an explanation/answer for something, and the reaction to things I've said is commonly "you're an engineer, aren't you".

geek test:

What star trek episode did Dr. McCoy get the girl?

What issue of Hulk did David Banner first separate from the Hulk?

What sector of a HDD actually holds the FAT ?

Answer those and you are a geek.

What are Star Miniatures?

Star Wars Miniatures is a Strategy game.  You create points based armies and you have prepainted plastic miniatures.  Similar in concept to Warhammer 40k.

Oh yeah.  I still read comics.  I have way too many books.  I dont intentionally collect them, but am deep into the stories.  I subscribe to all Superman and Batman books.  Subscribed to Teen Titans, JLA, JSA, Outsiders, Astonishing X-Men, and New Avengers.  I also like Supreme Power.

Man I am a geek.  ;)

Well, I'm feeling a bit better about my geekiness now. Chad beating down the bullies did it for me. I was the kind of geeky kid that would put up with truckloads of BS and torture, but once I got mad, someone was going to the hospital. I ended up earning this weird respect that allowed me to be a math whiz, and play 2600, and read comics, without the torture.

I'm sorry Shape, but that last one has been rescored  :police:- Sound Recording Engineers are cool AND geeky. I believe that pushes you over to the geek majority.  :P

As for my own qualifications:

BA in video production - geeky
MS in Multimedia Technology - extra geeky
I do Technology integration training for a branch campus of a State University - uber geeky

Home Network multiple machines, PC & Mac - check
Entire music collection digitized - check
Various comics, Sci-Fi, Tolkien, etc on the bookshelf - check
Compulsive consumer of "Geek Juice" (Mt. Dew) - check
Building my own arcade controls - check!

I've been called a lot worse over the years, not that it every really bothered me. These days the people I hear using the term geek are using it as a compliment to someone's technical prowess. I think I can live with that. Didn't someone once say that the geeks shall inherit the earth?  :P

shmokes is a geek.

That's true, from the standpoint of knowledge and skills.  I'm definitely a computer geek.  And I have a pez dispenser collection with about 400 different dispensers.  But I'm also good at sports, have never been a social outcast and don't consider any girl out of my league.  Being a geek just means that I am able to make good money and set up a home network that makes my apartment a lot cooler.

You, on the other hand, are a nerd.

You don't use the R2-D2 phone 'cuz you don't want to mess it up...Use the Force geeky

Even before I dropped the land line for cell-only phone goodness, I had white zip tied the receiver to my R2 phone so it would still beep and boop, but no one would ruin it by using it.

That may just make me anal retentive though...

Comics, d&d, ad&d, more computers than I can count (7 plugged in none using the same OS and two of those use some kind of BASIC as the default user interface), 3 arcade machines one of which I made myself, every version of Star Wars ever put on any media (VHS, Beta, LaserDisc, VideoDisc, VCD, DVD original cut and greedo-shot-first-BS cut) plus Ewok Adventures and The '78 Star Wars Holiday Special, teach 5 different "computer" classes, am the goto guy for tech problems for several schools in a school district I don't even work for anymore...

overweight, unshaven, glasses, need a haircut, single (go figure)...

geek.
nerd.

Hmm...let's see.....
I had 11 PCs at home at one time (donated most to charity), now only have 5, including the one pictured below.
I used to be a forensic chemist.
I played D&D as a teen.
I built my own joysticks for my Commodore64!
I actually wear black horn-rimmed glasses (although they are Italian and rimless)
I almost made it to State in Science during high school.
My favorite channel is G4.

But since I have never bitten the head off of a live chicken, I am a nerd, but not a geek.

How do you have horn-rimmed glasses which are rimless?

If someone you know owned one and you reckon they'd need to phone you up for tech support then it's classed as a computer in my book.

"Rimless" actually means semi-rimless (stupid terminology, I know).  They have no frame along the bottom, only a clear nylon string that is grooved into the lens.

Hmm, I tend to relate level of geekiness to numbers of girlfriends one had in high-school (and yes, if you had one girlfriend all the way through, you MISSED OUT).

Understanding the cable guy isn't geekworthy, it's just knowing a couple basic things.  Calling your ISP's help desk, asking for a supervisor, explaining the exact problem to him and telling him how to solve it, when he's not sure, is geekworthy.

And yes, I have done that a few times.

I guess I am a geek at age 13 I spent so much time watching the pinball tech repair pins after a year he would let me diagnose the broken pins with him watching of course was right about 90% of the time. The best gift he gave me was the schematics for most of the pin/videos in the arcade. Always was the guy who fixed the vcr's for my circle of friends. In the early 80's found a huge hole in the computer system that kept all the grades for my school district. And seeing report cards were about to come out I gave my friend passing marks so his folks would let him go to a concert in a couple of weeks. Now I keep my computer smarts VERY secret got tired of my friends moms asking me to disinfect their computers of spyware/viruses after they just finished opening every email they got in hotmail for the past month. Or going to someones house and hearing the magic question "oh while you are here could you look at my system it seems really slow" and seeing kazza running in the background.

Heh, yeah, I tell people to bring their computer to my house, that I don't work on machines at other peoples' houses because my 'tools' are all here.

That stops 90% of the requests, people are too damn lazy to bring the machine over.

I would consider a 2" steak a great incentive.  No one offers me anything, they invite me over on false pretenses and then ask me to take a look "while I'm already here".

A person offers me a freshly grilled 2" steak and I'll rebuild the whole freakin system for them.

I generally just look at it and see what freaking stupid software they downloaded on it to screw it up in the first place.  If it's easy, I fix it. Then if it looks hard I do one of two things:

1) I tell them to buy some software to fix it
2) I screw it up worse and tell them "I've done all I can do".

Yeah, but it's the people who invite me over and then spring their PC on me that annoy me.  If they wanted me to fix the damn PC, ask me to fix the damn PC, don't lie to me about why you wanted me at your house.  It's not like I want to go, but the wife never turns down an invitation.  So at this point, I'm at someone's house I didn't want to visit and they reveal that they had an ulterior motive for inviting us in the first place, making it an even bigger waste of time.

I'm not even sure about that.  Get a real musicians to start talking about music (or better still, music equipment) and they will lead you to a place that's going to make any conversation about how to power a JAMA board look pretty normal.

When I am diagnosing problems on friends' PCs, I usually poke around for a few minutes and then ask them, "Do you go to porn sites?"  And when they respond with "yes," I answer back, "Oh, it has nothing to do with the problems you are having, I was just curious."
Friends don't let friends buy iROMs.

I got a friend in trouble with his wife once doing that... I knew his wife was one to hate porn, so I put a bunch on his machine in a dir called TEHHOTCHIX right where it would be seen.  His wife went apeshit.

He said she HAS a uniform, not that she was willing to be seen in it.  He probably bought it for her and she told him to get bent.

I might be a geek. My name is USSEnterprise, I am watching an episode of Star Trek at 5:45 on DVD. I have a Starfleet uniform, I have autographed pictures from a lot of the cast. I have over 110 Star Trek novels. I help fix other's computers. I set up my family's home theatre system. I have four PC's in my bedroom alone. I might be a geek

My wife is probably a bigger geek than me. She has read Star Trek novels and also has a Star Trek costume (not sure what type of costume it is, it's of the red miniskirt variety). Not to discriminate though, she also has a Princess Leia costume. A couple of halloweens ago we dressed up like characters from Lexx; that was probably the geekiest thing I've ever done, but my Kai outfit was badass! Only one person in our local bar recognised who we were supposed to be (obviously a complete nerd  ;)).

Oh, Law and Order.  I don't watch much TV, and with Tivo I rarely watch live TV.  Whenever I do flip through live tv, there is a Law and Order show on 75% of the channels.  That show must have more spinoffs than a NASCAR race held on Lake Michigan in February.
