Yes.

Please, no one answer, I want this guy to do a little search, considering this is *the* most asked question about Mame.

If after twelve hours, and he still can't find an answer then possibly post it for him.

Maybe there should be an "Extremely Frequently Asked Questions" sticky at the top of the Software forum with a detailed answer to this and other very common questions. I'm sure there's a BYOAC FAQ somewhere (not the official Mame FAQ) that details this, but it must be burried somewhere.

Thing is, the BYOAC is tough to find (now it's at http://www.arcade-at-home.com/mame_faq.html ) and it still doesn't address this question.
A simple locked sticky wouldn't hurt.

There is a sticky right on the top of the Main Forum.
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,19049.0.htmlMain Forum.

Yeah, and it links to the FAQ that I posted earlier, which doesn't mention anything about disclaimer screens.

Stupid questions will always be asked because there will always be....

On second thought I won't finish that, no need to get rude.  ;)

Regardless the answer is posted plenty of times on all the major sites and the official mame faq.

I'm proud of you all for finally taking my lead and refusing to answer it.

FAQ or no FAQ you'd think before asking on a forum, it would occur to people to type "mame disable nag screen" into Google.

Okay, I'm gonna take some heat for this (I did wait 23 hours instead of the recommended 12), but look at this message:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,36217.msg318959.html#msg318959

Now, in defense of the others, you can also notice that that message was posted only 1 week ago, and should have come up in a search of this forum under "OK" or "Screens" or "warnings" or some combination of these.

It's not that you asked a question with an easy solution.  It's that you asked one that has been asked 100 times and didn't try to search the forums first.

Well I sorted it anyway without your help!

Just to point out the FAQ on this website is impossible to find, where the hell is it?

Being new to Mame I thought it was alright to ask for some advice, i did not realise that it was such a big deal, otherwise I would not of bothered.

Now have disabled the warning screens I would like to ba able to get rid of 'Screen flipping is not supported in cocktail mode, The colors are wrong", etc. messages. I have read a post which explains how to do this but cannot follow the instruction:

Open mame.c and around line 505 you will see the following code:

/* show info about incorrect behaviour (wrong colors etc.) */
if (showgamewarnings(artwork_get_ui_bitmap()) == 0)

Can someone tell me how to open the file mame.c so I can alter the file?

I hope this question is ok?

  Lea,

I think the bigger issue with your first post is that you asked a question that has already been asked about 100 times.  If you took some initialtive first and did a search and STILL couldn't find your answer (which would have been impossible with that question), then I think your question would have recieved a lot warmer reception.

Anyway, I'm glad to see that you "learned" from that experience and tried looking up the information for your second question yourself first!

To answer your new question, if you follow those instructions you found, you would be going down the path of setting up your own MAME dev environment, downloading the MAME source and recompiling all yourself.  It's not a bad thing, in fact I think it's a good experience for anyone to try at least once, but completely uneccesary.  There are a ton of MAME derivitaves, almost all of which are pre-compiled and include an extra skip_warnings flag built in.

Take a look at http://www.myarcade.org/?lc=MAME+Derivatives to see a list I've started to compile.

Once you download and install any one of these, run it first with the -cc flag (like mame.exe -cc to create a config file. Open up that config file and search for the skip_warnings flag (usually near the bottom) and set it to 1. Save, exit, test.

Anyway, we're all a bunch of nice people, but like any group we don't like lazy bums who are just looking for handouts (which you're not by evidence of your followup question).

-sab

This require you to COMPILE your own MAME.EXE file. You can use NOTEPAD to open the file and edit it, then follow the instructions how to COMPILE your own MAME.EXE.

This is how I compile mame.

This is so easy.  The last time I compiled a program was 20 years ago in FORTRAN 77.  Go to the following link and within 30 minutes you can have your own version.  Mr Do created a step by step for compiling your own mame.  Thank you Mr. Do!

Read Mr. Do's page on compiling Mame.
http://www.mameworld.net/mrdo/compile.html

After you have downloaded all the files necessary on Mr. Do's page, then download mametweaks.

http://www.mameworld.net/mrdo/compile.html

Run mametweaks then compile, it is that easy.

I use the following from mametweaks.

-skip_startup_frames <int> / -ssf <int> (default 0) will unthrottle and not
display the specified number of frames at the beginning of a game to skip by
them faster.

-[no]skip_warnings / -[no]sw (default disabled) will skip game warnings.
This is useful for skipping warnings like "The video emulation isn't 100%
accurate.", but keep in mind that it will also skip more serious warnings
such as "This game doesn't work properly.".  It might be best to enable this
option for specific games that you want to skip the warnings on instead of
enabling it globally.

The skip warnings have been removed from the current version of mametweaks but with the skip warnings and the skip start up frames, this makes my mame machine exactly the way I want to.  I just get tired of watching the entire bootup process, but that is my choice.  Plus I know not to post any issues that I may have with mame since I compiled my own version, guess what, it worked perfect and I don't have anything wrong with my mame.

My next project is to add cpviewer.

Have fun compiling!

i'm interested in the skip frames switch

is there a list of frames for each game that will take you straight to the attract mode?

i would like to hide all the rom startup stuff on my cab if possible

it would make it look much better when choosing a game from the mamewah menu

There is a short list around (I've attached it below).

Other than that, it's mostly just run the game from the command prompt, hit escape the second the attract mode appears, and make an ini file for that game that has this:

Code: [Select]
skip_startup_frames XXX
XXX being the number of frames MAME reported back to you after you exited the game.

I have created a zip file that has all of the roms listed in the ssf.txt file in the ini format.  This took me a couple of hours to do, so I hope it can help others.  I tried to post the zip file, but you can't attach a zip file in this forum but If you want for me to send the zipped file , just email me.

Below is an email I received that helped me use and create the ini files for the  skip_startup_frames.  I created an ini folder in the mame folder and then created an ini file for each game.  The ini file is named for each rom game, for example, "mspacman.ini", and then the only thing listed in the mspacman.ini file would be "skip_startup_frames         290".
Maxximame, I think MAME may create the .ini file for you.  Otherwise, though I don't see an easier method than what you suggest.  BTW, did you see endtwist's attachment on frames to skip?  (four replies up or so . . .)

Tiger-Heli,

I downloaded the file from endtwist and then spent the next hour and a half making the individual ssf ini files.  I am trying to have someone post the ini files to thier website for download since I can't post zip files here so others could have access to the ssf ini files.  Just trying to contribute back to the community.  I think the reason most people don't use the skip frames is because they may think it is too hard to implement, it only takes a couple of minutes to add the skip frame capabilty.

Maximame, I sent you a p/m asking for your zip-file, however, I also downloaded the file from endtwist, as well as copied ones from the post a little further down which contained a couple of others not in that list and created the individual ini files.

I have put the zip-file into my webspace with my provider for download. Hopefully it works as it's the first time I've ever taken advantage of it.

Here it is:SpeedStartupINIs
When I tested it, you get a 'no page to display' error (no fancy html pages here) but it still seems to prompt you to download save the file.

Let me know how it goes.

Worked for me.  Clicking the link above in Firefox took me straight to save/open dialog.  File downloaded and opened with no problems.

Thanks for helping with this.

Now worries at all. Glad I can help out. This forum has helped me heaps.
As more people work out the frames to skip, I'm more than happy to keep updating the file if people send me their inis.

I've decided not to use the skip_startup_frames myself as for some reason key responses in my MAME went all weird. It appeared to not recognise keystrokes and then suddenly play them all back in one go...??? I am on MAME 095 using a keywiz max. To alter the code I used (what I assume is) the latest version of MAMETweaks. The one contained in an exe and you tick the boxes of whichever alterations you want to make.

Doesn't overly stress me though. I'm more than happy to have the genuine arcade look to games loading up. Would be interesting to hear people's opinions on why it might behave like that though.

Is your computer fast enough for that version? For the latest versions, you should honestly be using at least a 1.5GHz PC. Otherwise, it would be better to go with an older version based on your processor speed.

Oh, and I have quite a number of INI's I have put together myself for skip_startup_frames (100+ of them? It's taken me hours and I haven't kept count) so I probably will post them in this (the Software) forum at some point.

Hi Guys

Think I am glad that i asked the original question as it seems to have sparked a cracking thread. Can someone please clarify whether I should compile my own version or mame or whether to incoperate the skip frame ini file in my mame folder?

Also does it matter what the skip frame ini file is called in the mame folder?

Hey thanks again for all your help.
