Compile Mame?
« on: April 28, 2005, 01:28:55 am »
I picked up the following utility from Kevin at Retroblast:

SA Dev's MAME Patches Updated!
The excellent set of MAME patches from SA Dev has just been updated, with a new GUI interface, apply/unapply options, and more. Everything's updated for MAME .95 as well.

If you haven't checked into these patches, I recommend that you do: they really add a lot of powerful features and tweaks to MAME, everything from the ability to skip over boot processes to a true "high priority" mode for squeezing out the most game performance possible on your system.

When I ran this for the first time tonight it sounds like a great program.  However, on the start up screen it indicated that I would need to compile Mame again before I could run it.  About 25 years ago I remember compiling programs but heck if I know how to do it now with Mame.  Can someone point me in the right direction to tell me how to do this?

Thanks!

MAME.NET has a page HOW TO Compile your own. Also a link in MAMEWORLD. Go there and READ READ READ, once you get use to it, it all comes easily. Make sure not to skip any steps while doing it. Sometimes you need to RE-READ it again and again.

Make sure you get the files for the version of mame you plan to compile.

If oyu are going to to the latest (.95) then all you need is the mingw and mingw_over_mame specified on mame.net site for that version.  Install mingw, overwrite the installation with mingw_over, get mame source, add \mingw\bin to your path (use a bat file like suggested :) ) and make away.

Thanks for the pointers.  I am curious, has anyone used this utility and is it worth it?  If I have to go through many steps to recompile am I really gaining anything by not just going in and manually changing the config files?  Or, will I pick up other benefits by learning how to recompile?

Please don't tell me it is a growing experience, I get enough of that at work.   ;D

Did you run the app?  Interesting tweaks can be made.  If oyu need them, sure, compile your own mame.

bah, just get Mame32 and you dont have to compile.  dos purists will say that mame32 is crap, but thats because they dont know.  mame32 is just the all the mame dos junk with a windows interface.  ive never had problems with it and runs all my games smooth as silk.
