Well, I've knocked out walls before to put in a pool table that wouldn't fit through the door.  Dry wall is cheap and as long as you don't tear up the framing, you can re-use the 2x4's.

BTW, I did this on a rented town house.  Land lord never knew any different.  Neither did the movers when it was time for me to move...LOL

I told the movers that I didn't know how it got into the house.  They had to call a crain to move it out of the 2nd story through the sliding doors on the deck.  Lots of fun.  Pics if needed of the wall I had to replace.  It didn't cost too much, like $20.00 if I remember right.

Good luck!

I have one of these cabs in my home. Look here. I got it from someone who cut it in half to get it into his house. You can see the cut lines. Assuming you have a similar cab, it's not possible to "pull this apart into separate cabs".

OMG!!! do not cut the cab.
I have the same one. Just take the door off the hinges. mine fit through the front door of the house. To get it into the arcade room I just took door and door jams off, put cab in the room and nailed the jams back in.
very heavy cab. back hurt for a week.
Great cab, mine is still a nintendo VS, I will Mame it some day but I am not in a rush. Will be my last cab to Mame.

Took a look at it today and pulled some measurements.  There is no way to get this in the house. >:(

I'll either have to:
1- Build a new cab (that looks the same but splits).
2- Hack up this one (don't want to do that).
3- Pass it along (don't want to do that).
4- Keep it in the garage (it's actually getting a lot of use out there).
5- ??

Do you not have sliding glass doors in your house, you could take both doors out very easily, im sure you thought of that.  ;)

Been there, done that. I picked up my VS cabinet (Excitebike/SMB), got it home, and discovered the same thing. If I remember correctly, the back of the cabinet to the front of the control panel measured about 35", and the door to my gameroom was 33" (there's also a load bearing wood railing that would have had to come down as well). After hanging on to it for about six months (and playing it out in my garage from time to time), I put it back on eBay and resold it. The happy ending to my story was, I used the money and bought a sit down VS cabinet with SMB and Dr. Mario in it, so all's well that end's well.

For what it's worth, I scratched my head going over that cabinet for a while and never did figure out an easy way to cut its size down.

Yeah it looks to be ~35'' due to the cp sticking out.  I'm going to have to rearrange the garage to accomodate this thing.  Hogans Alley is incredibly fun.  The girlie & I keep using it as a decision maker.  If I want one thing and she wants another, we "take it to the garage".  It's funny because she was never into this stuff until now.  She can't smoke in the house, so this gives her something to do out in the garage while she smokes.  I just have to make sure she doesn't get better than I am at the game. ;)

What games plug into this?  Just the vs boards?  Or is this some type of nintendo standard?  I haven't looked at the electronics yet.

I think other Vs. games are just a chip swap on the boards you've already got.

I have a Vs. Red Tent cab and all you should need are the roms to swap games. I just picked up Excitebike roms for $.99 on Ebay for mine. Others are going for alot more, but they are always a few being sold.

I'm just amazed at how much Super MArio Bros ROMs have been selling for.

To kind of jump back to an earlier part on this thread--

I bought a Ridge Racer from the Roseville Namco Arcade. I actually managed to fit ti in my van, but I couldn't fit it through the sliding patio doors in my basement. The weatherman predicted an ice storm, so I had to get it inside the house, and QUICK!  Here is what I did:

I removed all of the components: Monitor (33" heavy bastage) the CPU box, etc. I then took off all of the plex.

I then took a screwdriver and pulled the wooden braces off of the inside corners (gently! but ineffectively)

Then with my trusty rubber mallet, I knocked the sides off of the cabinet. I then brought it all in piece by piece and reassembled it. I then replaced the wooden supports with many, many L-brackets.

Here is the original thread on the topic:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,14192.0.html

It may be a little time consuming, but it's worth the effort... ESPECIALLY if you use the garage for your cars as well. It may be fine during the summer months, but if you keep bringing in a car to that garage dripping with snow, the electronics inside the cab may start to deteriorate (rust).

Good luck!

I don't mind spending the time, I just don't know how far it will breakdown.  I know my Jungle King cab comes so far apart it you could flatten it.  I'll have to poke around this thing tomorrow.  If there's any chance of breaking it down and walking it in, I'm all for it.  I don't care if it takes a month. ;)

Yeah, but then he'd be passing up the opportunity to give it to me and be able to say to his friends that he met DrewKaree ;)  In fact, this would be a meet and greet opportunity he'd be giving a few members, as I'd stop by and visit you and show you what I snaked from you, drunkatuw - who could demonstrate for me just HOW drunkatuw he's willing to get, and Shape D, who has a pressing need to meet me...dunno why, but he threw the double-winky-smiley guys at me, and Stingray tipped me off to what that meant....I'd still be willing to meet him and let him buy me a beer or twelve.

I can't believe one person would be that selfish, so Cooter, just drop me a PM with your address when you're ready.  I'll pass along your China comments, and prolly clean 'em up for you when I stop by APF's house.  I'll let you know when I'll be stopping by so you can hide the wimmins and chi'rens. ;D

I believe they are the roms located behind the chip with the heat sink on it. That's where mine are on my Vs Golf. As for the numbers, I'm not sure since I will be doing my first rom swap this weekend.

Oh, I forgot one important thing. The RR cab was made out of plywood. I can't remember off of the top of my head what Nintendo used to make their cabs, but if it's particle board, smacking it with a rubber mallet may get a bit tricky. The particle board may not like being struck with a rubber mallet, and could crumble or break apart at the joints (old particle board seems to crumble for me, anyway).

So if it IS particle board, you may want to think twice or even a third time about breaking it apart. You could make your VS cab firewood if you are not EXTREMELY careful.

Drew: Yeah, but I'm better lookin'.

Nintendo cabs are plywood. I completely took one apart and then rebuilt it in my attic bedroom like 4 years ago.

C'mon....your mom was being nice....ALL moms tell their kids they're handsome.  I didn't want to be the one to break it to you, but you're....how'd Bones put it?  As ugly as a robber's dog with no lips or something like that?   ;)

Cooter, what are these dimensions?  There's GOTTA be some workaround for this without tearing your HOUSE up, seems like carefully tearing the cab apart is the way to go, or else walling off that side of the garage, insulating it, and turning it into your arcade is the only solution.

One way or the other, it'll work, but what are we looking at dimensions-wise, that won't fit?

The widest rough opening is the garage door.  It's on a block wall though and is about an inch too narrow.  For "normal" cabinets, I can just drag them in through the back door.  Unless the "nub" between the cp's comes off easily, It's major disassembly time.  (Even without the nub, it may be tough because of a corner I have to take)

[scans pic for incriminating evidence]
See attached cabinet pic and photochop of door area.  34" between the blocks. >:(

I had a good and bad experience with my rom swap. I bought 3 games Excitebike, TKO Boxing, and super Mario Bros. The excitebike swap was very simple, just be sure you don't break any pins on the chip. I swapped the roms and the PPU (the chip with the heat sink) and I was playing Excitebike.

TKO Boxing was missing the PPU chip and I tried using the Golf PPU, but it made the colors incorrect. I was able to use the PPU from Excitebike to get the game running with the correct colors.

As for Super Mario Bros. I bought a non-working set off ebay. All I would get is a blue screen. I figured it must be the rom set that I have so I purchased a set from Hobbyroms.com. He can't program the PPU, but I got the other chips from him. My order came yesterday and I swapped the old chips with the new ones, but I was still getting the a blue screen. I was hoping I didn't have a bad PPU, but after trying it in 2 different board with the game being as the 1st or 2nd game on the board it still didn't fix anything. I finally thought that maybe someone had glued the heatsink on backwards onto the chip, so I put the chip in with the name facing backwards. When I did that I didn't get the blue screen any more. I just got a black screen, even when I placed it facing forwards again. I guess I ruined the PPU for good.

Luckily Hobbyroms will let me send the chips he did for me back if they didn't work. I'm pretty sure an Ice Climbers PPU will work for Super Mario bros too. If I can find a set for cheap then I'll try that before I send the chips back.

Anyway, The rom swap was easy, it should take you 5 minutes to do it. Nothing too hard.

I hope this helps you in not making the same mistakes I did with putting the PPU in backwards.

I'm pretty sure any of those games will work in your cab.
