Killer Instinct Speedup.
« on: March 09, 2005, 10:09:41 am »
Hey folks.

I'm running Mamewah with Buddabing's mame.

My system is an AMD Athlon XP 2000.

It's right on the edge of having enough horsepower to play a very smooth emulation of Killer Instinct.  My question is this...  I order to speed it up a bit, I want to disable Autoframeskip, and perhaps experiment with turning the vsync's off.

I can do this no problem from a command line.. but, how do I set these options for one game as opposed to globally setting the options inside my mame.ini from mamewah?

Thanks guys.

David

I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

I just double checked here at work (shhh....) and my mame.ini was loaded first and then the game_specific.ini in my INI folder was loaded.

Therefore you only need to have the lines that are different in the game_specific.ini to overwrite the mame.ini.

Thanks guys!  I'll try that when I get home (I'm at work as well.. shhhh!)

And.. I'm definitely not adventurous enough to try a recompile!!

Buddabing,

Feel free to 'throw' together an AMD version of Buddamame for me though :) :) :) :) :)

Unfortunately for most of us, we need to work to keep a roof over our cab, feed our cab, and send it to a good school.  (As well as making more of them, of course).

Dream, I second that recompile for an Athlon optimized buddamame. I wish I knew how to do it myself.

You'll see a 5% gain at best.  Compiler optimisations don't magically gain you double framerate.

I take 5% more anyday. Wasn't expecting something magical but any gain in speed is a good thing to me.

I think that an XP 2000+ should run Killer Instinct quite well.  I've noticed that fighters will skip when vsync is on - turn it off and it should smooth KI out for you.
One word of warning when building a Mame cabinet, hook up the controls LAST!!!  If you don't, it will probably take you 3 - 6 additional months to finish the cabinet.  -JustMichael

d.

I say again: "at best".  You won't get a magical 5% across the board.  There are a large majority of games that will see absolutely no speedup.  Even at 40 FPS, a 5% speedup boosts you to 42 FPS.  Not terribly useful.

If you want faster MAME, the best thing you can do is buy a faster CPU.  Don't rely on software optimisations, as that is not the MAME devs' nor the compile writers' concerns.

You're definitely right.  The processor is what it is.  However, if an optimization happened to be out there, I'd definitely be using it..  even if it only gave me 1 extra fps.  But, I wasn't sincerely requesting an AMD build from Buddabing..  It was mostly joking.  I realize that the effort wouldn't be worth it.

Aww well! :)

Should I turn off vsync altogether?  I've got my comp connected to a TV through an s-video cable.

Have you tried Ultra64?  It's written specifically to be a Killer Instinct 1 & 2 emulator.

Available Here.

I've tried it.  But, from what I've read.. it uses a lot of hacks to get the game running at the speed it does.  And, in my opinion, it kind of shows.  I think there have been a few threads here already listing reasons NOT to use that particular emu.  But, yah, it's an option for people whos comps are even slower than mine.

My 2000 can run KI pretty well.. and KI2 fairly well.  A bit more speed (2100, even) would have made them perfect, I suspect.
