Turbo joystick controls

Can someone help me out with mame settings here.

I am trying to run the turbo game and it works but the joystick is very sensitive and if you look at it right it will cause the car to crash off to the side of the pavement. I've tried adjusting the analog controls for my joystick but can't seem to make any real difference.

Can someone give me some pointers on how to set up a joystick to be a little more forgiving?
