Monitor Issues?
« on: January 06, 2005, 03:06:17 pm »
I have read through a couple of months worth of posts and I haven't found an answer to this question although there is definitely a lot of opinions,

With a PC monitor and an Arcade VGA card is there any problem with the lower resolutions?  I don't have the card yet but I'm having a problem running Asteroids, Defender and some other games.  Is this due to the fact that I need to modify the resolutions or is it a problem with pc monitors?

Thanks.

whats your setup?  with a pc monitor an AVGA is overkill--it was designed to give users ease of use with arcade monitors--any old crappy video card should run mame fine (its all done by the processor)

I use a 4mb ati card that i pulled from the dump and it works just fine on one of my setups.
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

It is a Compaq that is a couple years old.  I have a Radeon video card that I added.  It is AGP but I'll have to take a look at it when I get home for the model.

I was reading on here about utilizing an application (name escapes me right now) that will allow you to set your resolutions.  Thought about trying that to see if it made a difference.

This is an interim step as I'm planning on buying either a 21" monitor or an Wells arcade monitor in a few months.  However, if I can get it to run well I'd probably lean towards going with the pc monitor so I can run PC games off of my FE as well.

"With a PC monitor and an Arcade VGA " no such thing. AVGA is for Arcade Monitors not PC Monitors.

I guess I misunderstood what I had been reading.  Just to make sure I understand, if I go with a PC monitor I would want to go with whatever PC video card I choose, correct?

Then the primary issue would be having the correct resolution available which I can modify with the correct software patch?

Following this train of thought the main drawbacks of going with a PC monitor is that it looks "too good" and you would not be able to get much beyond a 21" monitor?
