I mean the THRUST and REVERSE is done witht the joystick.
I thought there a talk about  this before on how to make the joystick so when you facing right and push right, it will fly right, then if you push the joystick to go left, it will reverse and fly left. Its like you elimated 2 buttons, but the switching from left to right, it also reverses, so insead of pushing the reverse button, this is done for you when you change direction.

I dunno, I just use one of the P1 buttons for reverse, and the rest of the buttons are on the P2 side.  You could always just make reverse into LEFT OR RIGHT, so you use those directions on the joystick as your reverse button...

Whoa, I just tried playing defender with a bat stick and one of the P1 buttons as reverse.  It's IMPOSSIBLE!  Likewise, using left and right for reverse gets confusing fast.  You really do need an auto-reverse!  Please post if you discover the hack!

Seems like I remember that this was accomplished via a cheat.  I just ran it via advmame and enable cheat and now it does what you're saying-i.e. thrust and reverse via that joystick or in my case the keyboard arrows.
