I think it's cool that a chick is into video games as much as you are :) I have a couple of girlfriends that like to come over and just chill and play some games, they're hard to find though :D

Heh.  I just read an article the other day about the lack of women in open-source programming... one woman came forward to say, "We're here; I just use a neutral screen name to avoid problems."  She immediately started getting E-mail asking if she was single, if she would send pics, if she had a webcam....

Who knows?  Half of the people in this forum could be women and just choose not to advertise it...

Ya know, any woman who goes by the handle "atari2600chick" and is awesome enough to be building a MAME and hanging out in the MAME forums is probably not going to be offended by our particular brand of chauvanism.  ::)

SO BACK ON THE SUBJECT OF ARCADE CABINETS

yeah, looks like a pretty good start.  Any idea on color scheme/art/control panel layout?  You could totally do an awesome retro atari 2600 theme, yellow/orange bars are always a classic in my book.  don't know what the husband is into, but you can also get a lot of art suggestions/comments/etc. in the art forum.  Just remember, 4-player cp layout isn't the best idea generally unless you have a constant demand for 4 players, othersie the other 2 players are rarely used.  A 2-player layout w/ trackball/spinner/etc. as long as its not a frankenpanel is the best bet usually.
-keep the pics updated, and maybe switch hosting services, geocities craps out after like 10mb of pictures is d/l, which happens pretty fast due to fullsize jpgs.  (you might consider making smaller thumbnails)

yep i think you are right there Gunstar Hero  ;D. I wouldn't dare change my screen name and hide the fact that i am a female cabinet builder (I have to have some claim to fame thats sets me appart ;))and a retro arcade games junkie. Oh and because I am very happily married (even more so since my hubby started doing the wiring last nite for the CP) I am not bothered by pickup lines/ sexist comments (mind you that doesnt mean i am inviting them) . I just roll my eyes and think 'whatever'
Anyway yes back on the subject of arcade cabinets
The control panel is now ready for gameplay ;D We have a 2P panel with 6 buttons and 2 tstick plus.... I am not sure not sure of colour scheme/ artwork layout yet. I think i'd like some kind of classic design artwork. I have been playing around with making a marquee with mini classic arcade marquees in the design.
Apologies for the blocking at the geocities website... hopefully i will have another websitesite soon.

They aren't. RGVAC has no female members. KLOV.com has one female member, she isn't very active, and she is a member of a circle of friends who ALL own arcade games.

You never see any women bidding on games at the auction. This is a male hobby. Despite the fact that from my experience girls tend to have more fun with the finished products.

It's not entirely a male hobby.  I doubt that half the people on here are women, due to the nature of the hobby, but I also know that atari2600chick isn't the only one.  Same thing with RGVAC and KLOV.   How do I know this?

I'm a girl, and have posted at all three of those places.  Granted, I'm not very active in the posting, as I tend to read more and talk less, especially when I don't have anything to add to the subject, or my viewpoint has already been brought up, but we're around.

My roommate is also quite into it, though she's far more into the playing than the building/repairing - not that she hasn't worked on them as well, but I get more out of the fixing than she does.  She has more game playing background than I do, but I have the electrical and mechanical experience.

It's not purely MAME either, though it initially started out that way, the MAME machine is fully operational, but undecorated as most of my time is getting the rest of the games fixed up.  Only one of our games has come to us fully working.  Everything else has been fixed by girls.

Primarily a male hobby?  Sure.  Solely?  Hardly.

Also, atarichick - looking good so far! :)

I have now got the primer on my cabinet. Construction was a bit slow coz the weather has been raining and not suitable for painting. Hopefully this week i will start with painting it black.

There is not a t-moulding slot yet, as i havent got a router, but my husband bought me an early christmas pressie this week... a router so i can finish off my arcade cab. How nice (mind you i have never used a router before so we'll have to wait and see how it turns out)

I went to my hubby's work christmas party last night and one guy (who is a MAME and video games junkie) commented how lucky my husband was to have a wife who is building him an arcade machine - (he has seen some of the construction pics). My response was "what do you mean building it for him, ITS MINE...

Finally my arcade cab is taking pride of place in the lounge room after 3 months of building. This morning one of my friends came over and she was so blown away by the cabinet. It was so much fun playing on my very own scratch built cab. Its only 90% finished - still have to do the t-moulding and put on the bezel, make a marquee

Overall gj! the black&white theme is ez on the eyes!  I think your marquee should read ATARI2600CHICK with the colored atari symbols  but obviously that would denote yer hubbie's role in the project (or maybe he could just engrave/sign his name on the side or something.) That would prolly deter from yer overall B&W look too, but that tiny bit of color would really flare it up some!

Thanks for your comments yourfatmama. I am planning to have a colour marquee at present the B&W photocopy is only temporary. Eventually would like colour side art as well. I am still trying to come up with a name for the cab, I'm not sure about atari2600chick tho, altho some atari symbols would be cool

Looking good.  I was going to suggest you replace those white buttons with black, but I noticed you're going to eventually get a CPO.  You did a pretty nice job from what I can see.  I'm sure the hubby is enjoying it.  ;)

hey, your cab is looking sweet...

I have two projects on the back burner myself....mainly due to new baby.

My first cab may look familiar to you..lol

http://signaldev.com/cab

and my second cab is going to be converted to a Q*Bert cab with other games

http://signaldev.com/cab2

The only thing I would suggest is to not put yet another "MAME-Cade" or "Retro-Cade" or whatever...to me, it is done to death.  But then again, I am in a "simple is better" mood right now.  *I* would just make a marquee that said "Atari" and put the Atari logo next to it...and nothing else.  But then again, how many Atari games are you going to have on it?

That is such a great idea.... I love it! I just might suggest that to my hubby. Actually no, i might make a temporary sign for the control panel  ;)

Use these instead, and slyly point them out to him when he tries to steal your favorite controls!

Thanks for the da goils pics DrewKaree. When i put the original ones on my cab i realised the hers pic needed a skirt, so i drew one in pen but now have updated the cabinet and my previous post.

I am planning for the cab to get a huge workout over christmas. We have family coming and I can't wait to show it off. My hubby is over the moon with the cab and its so much fun playing it together.

I have been working on a new website with construction pics.

The website is http://www.geocities.com/mcnicols_arcade/
This will also probably only be a temporary site, my hubby will be working on a site with our ISP over the next few weeks, so this will be so much better than geocities.

I scored a free 21" svga monitor today for my arcade cab. Now i just need to make a bezel and get the marquee finished. At present its only been printed on paper. I have been working on a different design to the temporary one we have, i will probably post about it sometime later in the artwork forum when i get the other one finished

Thanks for your comments danny.
Hmm.... I wish the other 'arcade monitor' we have would fit in our cab..... here it is with a simpsons screen shot. sigh... i guess my next project might have to be one of those 4 player game station type arcade machines. lol

My husband bought me an early christmas present. It is a 27" CRT monitor for my arcade cabinet. It is a NEC 70cm Multisync XM29 monitor and we need to put better shelf supports in the cabinet so we don't have it in there yet.

1.  You're not married to her husband
2.  He's evidently not gay, and doesn't need to ply you with gifts

;D

glad to see it finally came together.  There is nothing better than finally getting a cabinet that comes together and is totally playable.  I still get gasps and what not when people go into my apartment and see my cabinet in the corner.  Btw, why haven't you made a solo control panel for that LCD tv??  I helped my parents pick out a 26" widescreen and all I've been wanting to do since they got it is hook up my computer and play emulation on that thing.
btw, are you guys set on black t-molding?  that thing might look pretty cool with some other color giving all the sides a little something to catch the eye.
