It is called the "At" sign, and it means "At".

That is why it is used in EMail addresses. Which makes more sense, "At Yahoo.com" or "Around Yahoo.com" ?

I had a friend who, in college, wrote a persuasive essay on the smurfs being a communist state.  Some examples were: Smurfette, created by Gargamel, was the anti-smurf.  She was dark-haired and intelligent, and would rock the Smurf society apart.  However, Papa Smurf (a blue Lenin) converted her to the Smurf side where she got blonde and stupid.  Communism supported female suboordination supposedly (say it five times fast), so we've got that'n.  I guess Brainy was Marx somehow, since he was at one time exiled for conflicting views but eventually embraced once the rest of the smurfs realized his brilliance.  You never really knew what the smurfs did - it was manual labor like farming and junk that you saw, everyone on equal standing (except Smurfette) for the most part aside from Papa Smurf who called most of the shots.  

Gargamel represented the capitalist society, big and corrupt, intent on destroying the smurf society for whatever reason.

That's all I can remember.  Maybe I've got Marx/Lenin switched around, but one was Brainy and one was Papa.  I'm not a big Communism scholar, and didn't pay a ton of attention in history you know... it's a shame because I don't have the time to read like I should.  ;p
