Maybe this is a stupid question, but where does someone get DOS nowadays?
and too a greater extent how does one install it and configure it , cause ill be damned if i remember..
I remeber DOS growing up, and i still remember most of my commands,but where to get your hands on it now? its not exactly at the local computer store anymore.

and what would be the best version for mame?
im using a real arcade medium low res monitor hopefull with with dosmame or AdvanceMAME

Use Win98 strip to DOS only so that way you can format a partition larger than 2GB or was it 512MB. Thats what I use, pure DOS with AdvMame, AdvMenu w/Low res cga Arcade Monitor.

Actually guys, you really don't HAVE to install dos so to speak... just use a boot using a boot disk, then format the hard drive with the /s (for system) option.  This will make the hard drive bootable.  So next time you boot to it, it will take you to the command prompt.  You can navigate around all you want just like that without really installing any sort of "DOS".  The only really important things missing are memory managers like emm386 and stuff like that.  You can download all those for free though.

does dos support ntfs, or will i need to reformat my drive to fat32?

DOS suppos not to recognize NTFS partition but I was just looking at that link above but haven't tried it and it seems like is reocgnize NTFS or I'm seeing it incorrectly ? Anyway one thing I did notice about that DOS 7.1 is that it supports LFN.

I can't find where it mentions anything about NTFS.  Could you please link or quote what it states?  If you want to play with NTFS partitions from DOS, you can play with this.

it appears that it does ,but only on the super boot disk,theres no mention of ntfs support on the primary install.
ntfs dos appears to havea 2gb partition limit, but still,thanks for the link witchboard  i think ill just go with fat 32, its dos native enviromennt.
