25khz!!! ?//.new cab... errr nooo conversion hope not good :(
« on: September 07, 2004, 03:03:06 pm »
hi there guys... just got myself a cab... been ready to do a convert with a j-pac and a arcadevga.. but before I started to play with all that I thought I would test the cab using a soul edge board that I had got hold of ... which I read on klov is standard res.. which I imagined the cab was.... (stated I wanted to use for mame when ordering from arcade warehouse- although they said they don't know much about).

I was told the soul edge board was fully working and a ok (a purchase from ebay...)

poped it in .. that was a challenge coz it didn't fit the socket very well trimmed off a bit of the edge boarding on the soul edge board so it would fit!!.. ( didn't want to do but the harness sides just came short of the connector..

fired up soul all ok I can hear that fine but while I can see colours on the screen I can't make anything out at all its just all over the place!!!!

not sure what to make of it... checked the soul edge board found a ickle pot for video gave it a tweak but no change..

wondered if it was coz its a 25khz mon (SHUDDER!!-NightMare) but there are no real stickers that say anything that makes sence on the monitor or board!!.. the cab is just non specific jamma cab 3 button jobby.. 20".

is this because its a 25khz mon ?.. or be I mistaken or board issues... I can't see any other way of me checking, I'm lost... and has cost me a fortune so far... if any of you guys could help me it would be so soo sooo of help..

hehhe... my months of dreams are going a touch sour right now :)... why mame it if I can't get a board working heheh.

I have included some piccies of what sticker was on the mon.. and a switch on the main board below it once again non-specific and bit worried about switching it... could it be a on off! ? if these boards have such a thing... or a 15khz or 25khz switch (Ideal dream right about now I think).

given arcade warehouse a email but I've had no luck in the past with them and emails really they tend not to respond the phone appears to be the best resource sadly...

the only real modelly sorta mark I found on the pcb is:

KI-2-VO

that I could see, it's well hard seeing around the board as it's all fixed in the cab heheh ...

which it say's on the monitor motherboard in screen printing.

once again any help you guys can give me could help me start my project... with the mame buz again instead of the I've failed at the first hurdle feeling....

(sorry about the quality of the sticker one but I've taken about 30 pics and I can't get one that infocus need a big light really ...

Thanks :).....

did you try that switch ? Maybe your monitor can accept 15khz or 25khz by the switch.

I had fear of the switch :) I was tempted... but wasn't sure about the possibilitys of it causing permenant damage being unmarked...

I don't know how many things they may use switches for, voltages ? something that might make it go pop?..:)

do you feel its save to give it a go and flick the switch...

it's quite big and obvious, great big mounted switch at the back of the board... but I can't see any markings. I can't see the other side of it due to its positioning but from how close it is to the edge of the board I wouldn't imagine there is a printed function the other side...

KI-2-VO - That's a Kortek Monitor Dude. Check with Kortek in Vegas and ask for tech support.  They should be able to help your sorry butt.
Good Luck!

That thing looks alot like a Kortek I have.. Mine is 15K.

KI-2-VO

If I remember thats the same that was on my monitor also. (I can't check at the moment, it's at the house.)

My kortek was nearly identical to the si-327 monitor, so look at the manual at http://www.mikesarcade.com/arcade/manuals/monitor/SI-319S.pdf

look at Jomarc's page and find your chassis.

http://www.jomac.net.au/mon.htm

Maybe you have a bad connection from the board to the monitor.

The pic you posted looks like no signal, not just wrong sync rates.

Later,
dabone

Oh BTW are you near Chicago?  If so I have a 25inch Jamma Nanao Tube that does both Medium and Standard.  We can test you board on that if you want to.

I wasn't sure if it was a no signal sign because it fades in and out as the screen changes ?.

hmm.. dough... I did have a big job getting the pcb onto the jamma loom the board connection is slightly too wide to pop on... I had to trim a couple of bits each side on the pcb a touch... didn't enjoy that...  still lots of space until the contacts though. but they appear to line up fine on onto the loom plug although its not fullllyyy onto the board by a touch... that would require a touch more of a trim and I didn't want to get carried away....

found that really strange as I thought its all damn standard hehe... its made the plastic edges on the jamma plug start to break out a bit very slightly....

the cabs a refub'd sold as fully working from arc shop was sold as pop a board in and play!!!!... and I'm sooo hoping thats the case hehhee... its not going all that overly well so far hehe

they've soldered all the wires down onto the loom and a button poped in with wires to the loom for coin insert and all. is pretty clean inside the psu thats in there looks new! (black one)

hmmm well I was just lying on the floor doing a inspection, trimmed the last last corner of the unused cacky board so the connector fitted firmly all the way down still with everything exactly the same!!!!
video all over the place but can see the screen changing and fading in and out with different graphics although absolutely none of it is possible to see!.

with a shine of my torch I noticed something odd!

on the top psx type board of the soul edge a section marked for a cap c16 with solder tabs but with indentations!!!!!
if they were pure smooth tabs I would have dismissed but there was indentations as though there was once a component, which now is no longer there! leaving its marks of where it used to be!

its quite hard to spot unless you shine it in the right light then its clear!!!!... you can see there once was a surface mounted cap there which is no longer!.

now this board was sold to me last week as tested and fully working on ebay!!.. but I'm starting to wonder now.. and exactly which year it was tested hehe..

this possible cap is also quite near to the video level pot which is to the right of it, meaning it must be located near if not in one of the sections of video electronics!!!

I'm just trying to use my detective hat :)...

I'm no electricitian .. hehe.

but I've worked with smc's and this just looks like solder pads were a smc has come off leaving its indentations..

could this be causing the video issue!! ?..

I now have a prob as its the only pcb I had for testing the cab with !!! :).....

I have upped a pic of the section of board I am talking about, but unfortunately you can't make out the marks of what would be a smc due to bad lighting its a nightmare with a cam at 11pm :)..

I would rather the board was to be binned or attempted to be repaired then a problem with the newley delivered cab hehehe.

Dunno, but you need to find the macro mode on your digital camera!  ;)

shows the slight indentations in the solder pads...

just trying to work out if its the board at fault.. guess I'm not really going to know until I get another board.. but its hard to be sure they work as they are always sold AS-IS!!! hehe

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

well I receieved my arcadevga and j-pac today... plugged the j-pac in no lights came on... but there was a picture on the screen all over the place as usual!!....

couldn't make any of it out......
granted I didn't have to driver installed but as far as I'm aware that shouldn't make a difference!!
the sync lights and things did not come on at all!

ohh dear not sure what to do now...

thinking about giving arcade warehouse a call tom...

but I can't imagine them saying much..

ohh wow I've not felt so angry in ages! :'(

I just had another go this time with the ps2 port in as I realised that its were the j-pac gets its power... didn't want to plug too much in ... test light came on and I sore the usual rubbish on the screen again touched the ic type chip near the leds and it was HOT HOTTT!!!!! now I know this was plugged in right pin 1 : 1 28:28 so there being a psu shouldn't be a issue I so so so hope it hasn't blown my j-pac!!!! oh wow I'm so at the point of wishing I had never bothered starting now hehe..
