broken ArcadeVGA card?
« on: August 31, 2004, 11:49:17 pm »
I just purchased an Arcade VGA card from you and I can't seem to get any signal from it.  I've tried hooking it up to my WG k7000 25" monitor without any signal, I've also tried to hook it up to my VGA monitor expecting the screen to be all garbled, but nothing happens on the screen on either monitor :-(

Is there any way that I can test the card to see if it's good?
I hope it's not the card, I really hope it's not the card, but without any way to test it I have no idea of telling what's wrong.

Can I hook up the s-video out and see the boot/bios/post screens through s-video?

 thanks all!

Ok, let me know if this sounds strange....

I have my PC setup that will go into my cab on my bench hooked up to a SVGA monitor.  I don't get any signal from the Arcade VGA card to the monitor, UNLESS I turn the PC on, then turn it off and back on really quick, like quick enough not to let the capacitence drain from the motherboard.  Then I get signal to the SVGA monitor... it's garbled a bit as to be expected, but it's there.

Shouldn't I get the garbled signal all the time?  I think my Arcade VGA card is bad or something :-(

  thanks all!

I'm pretty sure plugging the ArcadeVGA into a SVGA monitor is not going to generate a picture. The monitor will just think: "Hmm. Can't do anything with that". It's a lot cleverer than an arcade monitor or TV.

Switching the PC on and off quickly probably isn't doing any piece of hardware any good. Also, the other VGA connector and the S-Video will not function outside windows and need to be configured in software befroe they will work.

Try again with the WG - check all the wiring thoroughly and then maybe try the monitor with another input, or try the card with another Arcade monitor.

Remember you need to connect your arcade monitor (or JPAC) to the middle (VGA) connector.

The other VGA connection is for a regular PC monitor, but this will only function within Windows once the driver is installed.

Middle connector?  My ArcadeVGA card only has an s-video connection (TOP) and a VGA connector (bottom).

I know all my connections ar correct for the WG monitor, I've double and triple checked them.

I'm going to try a DOS HD that I have with arcadeOS on it set to 15khz, boot off of that and see if I get a picture with my regular ATI card....   A pain in the butt, but at least I'll know

I know it's hard to check if the AVGA is bad without anyone else you can try with. I had the same problem and I have looked for someone near me (60miles) and I drove to Santoro's place just to check out if the AVGA is good. My problem relies on the Video AMP cause when i check my AVGA in Santoro's place, it was working. That was the only time, I decided that the AVGA is good. Good luck on yours.

I guess you have a 9200 chipset card. Both mine are 7000's and have 2 connectors.

Here's the latest update....

I now have my monitor tuned almost perfect.  There is a slight issue with the ArcadeVGA displaying a little bit too large of a horizontal picture, the H-Pos pot won't make it fit the screen exactly, but I'm working on that.

At least I have a picture that I can work with...

BIG BUTT HERE-----  I still have to turn the motherboard on, then off, then rapidly back on in order to get a display from the ArcadeVGA card.  At least it's a work around for now, I'll talk with Andy when he gets back from holiday and see what he thinks it is.  Worse comes to worse I'll order another AVGA card and try that out, if it does the same thing then there's another issue all together, but if the new one works I'll RMA the old one back to Andy.  I'll OK this with him first of course :-)
I'll be out the shipping charges :-(  but at least I'll know once and for all what's up.

Unless there is a kind BYOAC'er in Eastern Mass that would be willing to let me try out my card in their cab or vica versa?  I live near the cape, but work up in Westboro so I have quite a distance that I travel and I'd be more than happy to travel a bit more....  I'll bring the beer too! (um, only if your over 21 that is :-), I can always bring the Coka-Cola or Pepsi! )

Mike,

things like horizontal display size, and on/off problems mostly are caused by other factors.

Size:  It's your monitor.  If the pot is twisted to the max, but the picture is still too wide, then look for the width coil on your chasis.  Some chasis have a widtch coil, others require you to swap capacitors.  It's a common issue.  Bob Roberts' web site has this documented very well!

On/off:  What motherboard are you using?? Is it a brand name or cheapest of the cheap? Not all motherboards are made the same, and sometimes they're also not configured correctly.  Things like AGP voltage and selecting what boots first PC vs AGP makes a difference.

I'll check out Bob Robert's site for the monitor stuff.  I realize that the Horz size is a monitor issue, I have to dig in deeper into the chassis and service manual.

AVGA issue:  My mother board is an ABIT, I have all the bios settings correct to display via an AGP vid card as it displays to a VGA monitor fine with a "regular" AGP vidcard.  Updating the BIOS is on my list of things to try out tonight, I have my fingers crossed that something works :-)

  thanks!
