Defender controls

looking at the defender control panel, it seems pretty hard to map buttons on a standard controller to mimic it to any degree of accuracy.  when people played it in the arcade did they use their left hand to press reverse? (thumb maybe)  that, thrust and fire are the main buttons, so i figure I should just map those so they are comfortable.  Right now I'm using a HotRodSE controller but will be getting a slikstik quad in a few weeks, anyone have a recommendation on how to map the buttons to play this game?

Also, to install the reverse button the correct replace you are going to have to drill a hole THROUGH your joystick base, unless you have a Defender stick.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.
