Metalized/Industrial pac-man?
« on: July 15, 2004, 02:39:21 pm »
Ok, I need you more creative people's help.  You've all seen my cabinet (for the most part).  Well, it's called YapCAB meaning Yet Another Pacman Cabinet.  Yeah, it doesn't look pacman yet.  Well, since I have that cool hammered metal paint I was thinking I need to make pacman look metal, industrial, mechanical(?).  I'v ebeen throwing around ideas, playing around in photoshop, but I just can't seem to come up with a look.  I am looking for inspiration.  If you have any ideas please show them off.  Anything, what you think would look good around the monitor, buttons, joysticks, sideart, kickplate, etc...

Ultimately my cabinet is going to have sideart, control panels art, shelf art, maybe something around the bezel and on the inside part in front of the cabinet, and possibly something for a kickplate graphic.

Now, my shelf, which I will design myself after I redo my shelf, will contain instructions on how to use whatever FE I ultimately put on my cabinet (which may end up being my own).  Of course the FE will have to go with the theme.

I actually like my current CP layout, other than I might move the tball closer to the bottom edge of the control panel.

Oh yeah, I also tried making a grafitti style which I think may also look good.  I am just not skilled enough or don't know a good technique to create that look.

I have an idea. I'll probably have some time to sketch it out. I'm thinking of a pacman made out of metal sheets that are bolted together. Little bits of rust from each bolt. This would also make a great "look" for a control panel. All kinds of metal sheets of different square sizes put together.

Is this the kind of look you're aiming for or is it a clean 'designed by Apple engineers' kind of metal/industrial look?

Like this? I'm not too good with textures, but this illustrates a little bit what I mean...

Click on the WWW under his avatar. That link works.

I like the "RoboPac" Felsir  ;D  Much more scary than the usual pizza-slice look.

doh, forgot that thread had the old link.  Updated.  You may have to copy and paste the link into a fresh browser, stupid free sites!

Hmmm, that's interesting.  A little too cartoony for me, but interesting :)  Definately gets ideas rollings.  That's why I started this thread, to get ideas.  Steel with rivits look .....

I found some fonts I might work with for the type on the instruction card.

http://www.1001fonts.com/font_details.html?font_id=8

Only if this was free.  this, to mee, looks arcadish enough.

I had another idea for the metal pacman: yellow paint! You know the effect of paint that is worn on the edges because things have scratched the paint.  A bit like the scratches you see on forklifts that have lifted lots of containers (I believe the forklift suits in Alien have this effect too in their paintjobs).
It would give the pacman a less clean look. Not sure yet how to achieve this effect in vector though...

Wow, that would look awesome! The image that comes to mind (being a Star Wars fan) is what the podracers look like from episode 2. They were pieced together out of spare parts and all dirty and banged up.

Those affects would need to be done in Photoshop...
