what happened to my monitor (Ken Layton)
« on: May 16, 2004, 09:44:01 pm »
I have purchased a Video Amp from Ultimarc and the picture and wass amazed of the difference from my VGA cable hack. The top border of the monitor is 2" more than the bottom (tried all adjustment, and no go, pic folds over) i decided to get a cap kit for my WG 4951. I had replace all 16 caps and was a succesfull job. The picture was brighter and now, the top and bottom are in same size (it fixed the border/fold over problem) In a couple of days i been playing my favorite games and then one day, the pic are like wash out. I had to turn the brightness so high and barely see the games. What has happened to it ? Did one of the caps died out, or did the Video Amp thats putting out 5volts to it killed the monitor ?
I hope this problem is an easy fix so ican turn around and fixed it.

Another Question for another Monitor WG4901.
Since I had a succes on getting a cap kit done on the first one, I went and did this second monitor I have. After the cap are done, I no longer see any picture on the tube. Was there a cap that I put have a cold solder on it ? Shold I re-solder all of them or did my flyback tranformer just gave out ?

TIA for the answers.

The entire 4900 series is well known for bad solder joints particularly around the outer perimeter of the board as well as at the large resistors and the horizontal output transistor. Check the solder at the flyback transformer as well. Sometimes the picture tube can go wierd with brightness problems but I don't think it's the case here.

Thanks Ken. I have re-solder alot of spots right where you mentioned plus some and the PIC is still washed out. I had to turned the brightness high so I can see the pic. I think since I have BURN-IN image on the TUBE, I think I'm gonna give up on it and get me some Hantarex 15-25-31 Auto switching. What do you think about this monitors running with AdvanceMame ? Will there be a problem with it if let say, I choose a 15khz game from the Front End, then when I exit out of the game and back to the FE and choose a 25khz game, or choose a 31khz game, will it hurt the monitor in any way when it Auto switches to this frequencies ?
Would you recommend this monitor ?

TIA

My experience is with commercial arcade monitors and with CGA resolution. Multi-sync monitors are not usually in commercial arcade games. I can't give good recommendations for Hantarex monitors. When Hantarex monitors conk out they can be very tough (and expensive) even for experts like me to fix.
