Dos sound driver issues
« on: March 29, 2004, 09:15:47 am »
Sound Blaster Live! Value
Liveware cd with DOS drivers on it.
Pentium III 667 MHz
128 MB ram
Dos Mame .53
Mame .53
ArcadeOS - Newest version

Here is what is happening to me.  When I start Mame either regular or dosmame from Dos, it freezes.  When I start ArcadeOS it has no problems starting but then seems to freeze within 2 seconds of being open.  Nothing short of a cold boot brings it out of this.

Autoexec.bat has the correct lines it in.
Set ctsyn line is correct
Set Blaster line is correct
c:\...\sbeinit.com is correct to actually initialize the driver for yoursound card

I can run SBEGO.exe and test the sound and it works just fine in DOS.

When I run windows 98, and then run mame inside windows 98 the sound works fine.  When I use Linux boot and Mame in Linux, sound works fine on every game.

Any ideas or anyone have a similar problem with Sound Blaster Live! Value?

Thanks

Do you have the correct settings for config.sys? You need HIMEM.SYS and EMM386.EXE. I'm currently using a Live! Value but I'm going to abandon it. It's flaky, IMO.
I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

Soundblaster Live's have never been good at DOS; IIRC, they need to run a software emulation of the original sound blaster.  If this is going to be part of a dedicated DOS cabinet, try to get your hands on a real Soundblaster 16.

The problem with soundblaster 16 is that they are ISA. Newer MOBO don't have ISA if you wanted to get a higher/est CPU. I use the PCI Soundblaster (not the live) and it works great in my PURE DOS ADvmame/ADvmenu.

They have PCI SB16s.

I have just a sb 128 PCI,
Comes with drivers and all for dos. (after first installing it windows98, you can copy the dos drivers)
Works fine for me.

First tried to get my onboard sound card in dos, but i better could have spent my time doing nothing (both a waste of time).

It's been said that a PCI soundcard based on the Crystal CS4281 chipset works very well with DOS MAME.  The only problem is that the driver installer must be installed on a machine running windows.  Once you do that, you can copy the files and the autoexec.bat / config.sys settings over to your DOS machine.

Check out this page...

The really nice thing about the Crystal chipset PCI sound cards is that they're insanely cheap.  I recently picked up 2 of them for $6.99 each.
Hantarex Polo 15KHz
Sapphire Radeon HD 7750 2GB (GCN)
GroovyMAME 0.197.017h_d3d9ex
CRT Emudriver & CRT Tools 2.0 beta 13 (Crimson 16.2.1 for GCN cards)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.8GHz
ASUS Z87M-PLUS Motherboard
