convert tv to arcade monitor
« on: February 29, 2004, 11:25:45 am »
Well, the last month I've been trying to get an used arcade cabinet with monitor for a decent price in many places but with no luck. It's like everyone in this business is cyclothymic. They want to sell you the stuff, then they don't, they say a price, then another one, they have the stuff, then they don't. I'm sick, really. (I don't live in the US)

So, I'm on my own, there is some stuff that I can buy outside, like the controls, and I'm going to build the cabinet. But the monitor is a problem, so I've read some threads about modifing a TV to an arcade monitor, but nothing concrete. I know there's a site where they will sell the chassis to do the conversion, it could be a last resort.
But from what I've read, I see it's doable but needs some research. I have a tv at home that no one uses and I could make some experiments. But I need something more concrete, maybe a web page explaining what I should look for and in theory what's the conversion about, I know it's different for every TV, but a general guideline. Do you know anything like this?

Thank you.

Francisco

Well, that's the site I said it was my last resort. I'm looking something more DIY, do you know anything?

This topic has been covered & beaten to death...  (I know because I was the one asking...) Search the monitor's threads & you should find it...

Anyhow, the gerneral gest is that you could get away with using a TV with RGB or get the 8-Liner chasis linked above... Otherwise, you won't be getting arcade monitor quality out of a TV.  Sorry...

a DIY has been done, but only by an Electronic Engineer who bought the schematics from the TV maker & had all the high dollar equipment to test the circuits & such...  Find the thread in the Monitor forums & you'll find a link to that guys site...

Later & good luck!
I'm not a freak!...
Oh wait...
Yes I am...

Thanks, it's good to know that it's been done. I'm almost an electronic engineer too, so I would like to try that out, I can use some equipment I have and some from my university. However I can't find the thread you refer to, I don't know if I'm not searching well or what.
It also could be before the forum as it's today was build and I would have to search in the archives, and the search feature is not working  ::)
Do you remember anything else about that thread?, aprox date, title of the thread, new or old forum, etc?
Thank you.

The post went to post hell #9, The information was ddemed "too dangerous" to be left lying around I believe.

I too was attempting to convert a TV into an arcade monitor. PM me, and I'll give you the details about how I did it, I'll try to dig up the schematic also. (couple of transisters and pots.)

Are you referring to the "whoo mama" thread? that one was invaluable to me in deciding to go with an 8liners and tv tube.  The lady across the street threw away a broken wal mart orion tv so my tube was free.  Once all the bugs were worked out, it works great.  The chassis is a little sensitive to its placement though (I cant mount it vertically in the cab)
