Monitor is black but you can hear game?
« on: February 21, 2004, 06:22:31 am »
Ok
I have a chance to get a game that the guy says the screen is black but the game will start and play. I am going to look at it, but....

1. what should I be looking at besides a cracked neck or other parts?

2.If there are no cracked broken parts what could be the fix ?

3.Would I need a new monitor, cap kit or something else?

Thanks in advance
ED

see if the necktube glows when powered on--if not, then there is a dead spot on that chassis somewhere so the tube isn't getting power.  you'll have to fix that before you can determine the condition of the tube.

check the flyback (large black thing) on the chassis for cracks or any discoloration that looks like it doesn't belong there (20 years of grime is ok)

its almost certain you'll need a capkit and thats very minor so ignore the caps at this point.

the biggest thing is to ask yourself, can i get this monitor running with my resources and expertise (and ken layton's ;))
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

Thanks

I have very little knowledge in case you didn't notice by what I wrote in my previous post but that never stopped me before.

I'm in the same situation, except i bought the game. I can tell you that a lot of people will try to sell you what you don't need. I learned the hard way. By people, I'm talking about the newsgroups, not people on this board.  Anyway, I get sound and the neck glows, but the screen is black. If I get mine working I'll tell you what i had to do since this is my first attempt at a cap kit. I just hope I'm not a klutz with  a soldering iron. :)

Ed,

Along with the other advice... look for cracked solder joints on the HV components that feed the tube the juice.
