What am I doing wrong
« on: February 11, 2004, 11:52:30 pm »
Hi all!  This is probably gonna be a long post but please take the time to read it and help me out.  I'd really appreciate it.  Anyways, I compiled mame56 for dos on the current machiene I'm running.  It's a AMD 300mhz, 128 mb,windows 98 (in dos mode).  And I'm running arcadeos with it.  I have done this setup on a 233 with the same specs and loved it, it worked great.  Well on this computer when it boots up dos scrolls slower than usual when you type dir, arcadeos takes I would say close to a minute to load.  Loadig a game takes quite a long time, exiting a game takes almost a minute and games like street fighter (with no sound of course) run a million miles a minute!!!  It runs way faster than the original game.  What am I doing wrong??  Is this possibly a hardware rather than software problem?  I would love any input you can give me and I'll add anything you need me to to help you figure it out.  Thanks everybody.

if you are just typing DIR in the DOS prompt and see the slowness, then I say that maybe your HD is going.
Just eliminate ArcadeOs/MAME and just do some DOS stuff like EDIT, DIR, Scandisk etc...to see if its also slow. If so, then its your hardware that giving you the problem and my guess would be the HD.
Do some process of elimination like...
Try Pulling out the HD from it and plug it in the other to see the results.

Make sure smartdrv.exe, himem.sys, and emm386.exe are running.

You would be amazed at how much difference smartdrv.exe can make.

Maybe I'm just stating the obvious here but you do have "throttle" enabled in mame don't you?  Without it a game will be drawn as fast as your system can handle.

Do I load all three of those programs in autoexec.bat or config.sys and how exactly should I tell the computer to load them.  Also is throttle set automatically on mame cuz I haven't touched mame's configuration if not I'll have to see if it's on.  Yeah it's weird when I'm in a dos window (win 98) everything scrolls normal but if I try to boot into dos it's slow so maybe it's those programs?  Thanks for all the help everyone I'd love to hear more.
