Tailgunner sound
« on: February 09, 2004, 03:02:52 pm »
I have alway been disappointed that the sound for Tailgunner was missing.

I little while ago, I came across astgl's site and he had a "faked" set of samples for Tailgunner and the source code to add the samples to MAME.

I recently got around to recompiling MAME and trying out the "faked" samples.  They were better than no sound, but not quite right.

Last week I happened to surf through Peter Hirschberg's site and was browsing through the photos of his basement arcade. Peter has posted mp3's of some of his games in action, including his Tailgunner II!

Peter has a really nice site and should be visited by every guy in there late 30's!  I love his VertiBird simulator and LEDHead game simulator!

I quickly downloaded his mp3, converted it to a wav and edited out the seperate sounds.  I put them together in a zip file and fired up MAME.  They work!  I now have a correct set of sound samples for Tailgunner.

After exchaning a few e-mails with Peter and cleaning up the samples a bit, I am ready to make them available to anyone that wants them.  Peter just asked that he get credit as the source of the samples.

The sound samples are here

The source code is available here

I have tested the source code in MAME 0.78 and in NoNameMAME 0.76u11.  I have not tested it in MAME 0.79

I have revised the sample set.

Peter Listened to it and told me that the bounce sound was chopped off.  It is supposed to fade out.  I went back to his mp3 and found a better sample to edit out of it.  I have also tweaked the volume a little more on some of the samples.

Use the link in my first post to download it.

I bumping this up to the top, because I just noticed that this is an official part of MAME since .79u2.

Yeah, my very first contribution!  ;D

Peter, Thanks again for your help!

I'll give this a try. I have added the sound samples to version 059. Let me see if this sounds better than waht MAME.NET offerred. TIA

The samples on MAME.net should be the same ones that I used.

I guess I had an older one. I had elim2.wav in my ZIP file. I re-downloaded it and compare it with yours and they are the same except hypersp and sexplode. The CRC are mismatched. Have you done something with those 2 files ?
