That first one is all the controls and cabling as well as a usb encoder
out of the two, you would want this one

the second one is for an actual arcade board. it's the controls with a jamma harness
unless you're planning to have a jamma board like the 60-in-1, you don't want this

just my 2 cents on these controls:

be careful of these generic control package deals on ebay, they are mostly no-name cheap controls.
you may save a few dollars only to be disappointed in how they work.
they may have very loud clicky microswitches.

my personal opinion is that a ball top joystick with a somewhat low profile looks best on a cocktail cab

Got any links you can share to some places that carry the right controls?

On the sound system. Can i just use a computer speaker set? They are small and shielded. Do i need a sound card to use PC speakers or will my built in sound sytem work?

You can totally go with pc speakers. its the easiest way.
they have the amp built in.
I would go for a set of logitech 2.1 with a separate volume pod. just keep that pod accessible in your coin door for changing volume.

for some good sources of controls, look at

www.groovygamegear.com
www.ultimarc.com
www.paradisearcadeshop.com
www.focusattack.com

In this pic......

...if you will look closely at the screen you can see that its set up for street fighter 2 with the screen split so each person can see. I really just want a two player cab, can i split the screen like so or have they done some tweaking to the code that makes up the game?

To do a split screen like the pic shows for most MAME games:

  1. Launch game.

  2. Press Tab. (menu)

  3. Select "Dip Switches" menu.

  4. Set Upright/Cocktail switch to Cocktail (if available) -- this is enough for many alternating-player games like Berzerk.

  5. Start a 2-player game.  If game doesn't display properly (i.e. flip for P2 like Berzerk does), go to the "Video Options" menu and select "Cocktail".

  6. Some games like Asteroids don't handle Cocktail mode properly.

Built the cab today. Its not perfect but it should play well. I used 1/2 inch russian birch instead of the 3/4. It looks good and had a lil burl to it. We based all the measurements around the flat screen so it could be seen. comfortably. And built it tough enough for heirloom quality.

The flatscreen fits in a cradle then the top is put over it and alligned with some spacer scrap pieces so theres no wiggle. Also thought it would be eadier to get to the controls if the control box didnt have a bottom. Now they are easy to get to and the wires are fed through a 1 and 1/8 hole.

What would be the easiest way to mount the glass semi-permanent to permanently to the top? I plan on using 3/8 thick with a bevel.

Spent the day installing the buttons. The wires were way too short for a cocktail cabinet so i had to do some lengthening for the player 2 controls. Had to cut a corner off the sticks, the 1 and 2 player buttons were in the way.

So heres my set up.

Samsung 24 inch LED TV

Dell Optiplex 745 intel core 2 duo 2.6GHz 2GB RAM and 250GB HD

ATI Radeon HD 3450 XT 256MB PCIe graphics card

Go grove Sonaverse PC speakers with subwoofer

Generic S-video to HDMI converter

2 player Xin Mo mame arcade controls

I still need glass and could use a couple tips on attaching it to the table.

Is there an easy way to re-route the computers on off switch or make it come on automatically when power is applied. Like when i turn the surge protector on.

The easiest way would be to use a smart power strip. You plug the computer into the master slot, everything else into the slave slots. Now if you turn the computer on, everything in the slave slots will get power, too.

I'm pretty sure there is an option in the bios to boot when power is connected on the Optiplex 745.

I don't like messing with the power switch on those, but people do it.

Yep i did a lil more research and found out how to change that.

Ive been using mameui 32 and its was working fine. Now today after setting everything it says its missing files.
I can use the original Mame interface non-command prompt. How do i set the buttons in the configure mode? Is there a list that i can use to tell me what to type for each button?

Well ive been sitting here playing with the controls after figuring it out. After some trouble I can play games now. For some reason in the controls menu i can put it on the menu caption for P1 right and hit the joystick right a hundred times but it would just put N/A or none. But eventually if i keep messing with it, it will show the correct direction.

Also i just picked the glass off of top of my cab and everything is so hot!!! Especially the TV. Do i need to install some kind of exhaust fan or make some holes. Im afraid im gonna burn it up.

Heat rises, so cocktails inherently suffer from this problem. And the glass just traps it all in right on the TV.

Most TVs have vent slots near the top edge for a reason.

If you don't have any exhaust, I'd think about putting some cold air intake vents near the bottom of the cab and some hot air exhaust fans near the top.

Not aesthetically pleasing but necessary for long gaming sessions. The bigger the fan, the slower it can spin so the quieter it will be. I hate hearing fan noise. Especially on an arcade machine.

Ok found a couple 80mm fans that i can install with some mesh speaker covers over them. Do i need to buy a seperate power supply or can i hook them up to my pre-existing set up?

Took a while but I managed to find a dual 80mm fan set with outer frame that looks nice and its powered by a USB. Is 52cfm enough airflow?

I used the Coolerguys Dual 80mm USB Cooling Fans in my Mini DK build. Only moves 20 CFM but that's all I need. You don't need to suck all the air out of the cabinet, you just need to keep it moving a little. However, these fans got a little loud so I ended up hooking them up to a Coolerguys Manual Speed Controller The speed controller could be used in conjunction with any USB fan. If it's too loud, turn it down. If it's getting hot, turn it up.

Here is another option with the speed controller built in. I have not used it but a decent option. It's a little loud, however, at 24dBA.

It got really hot!!!! So i want as much exhaust as i can get. They are about 23dba so thats not bad. Server coolers are much louder and that never bothered me much.

Coin mech became necessary though. Dont want to Have to remove the lid and glass to get to the power button and keyboard and mouse.

Is there a way to configure mame to be able to change games and or exit a game using only the arcade controls?

You need to get yourself a "front end" to switch between games. I'm a hyperspin guy but that FE has a steep learning curve. I've heard that Mala is easy.

When are you going to put a bezel over your monitor so it looks more square on the sides? I noticed you have a bow on the side to match the Monitor or did you do that on purpose?

I actually did that on purpose to make it easier to move and remove the top. Gives me a lil rom to wiggle.

I scratched some finish last night moving the glass and had to repair it today. With the heating problem, if i put bumpers under the glass that will allow some extra airflow to cool my LED screen once my fans come

Will mala work with mamegui?

Ok I'm gonna try this of its against the rules I will remove.

Can I ask where to find the mala controls.ini? I've tried several different sites including MALA and the links are dead.

The support files aren't copyrighted, so nothing to be worried about in the Rule 5 department.   ;D

The "controls" link at MAMEWorld is broken, but the other links to support files are on the right, about 1/2 way down the page.

Controls.ini can be found here -- it's older, but apparently not enough has changed since 0.141 to merit an update.   :dunno

Starting to figure the program out. Had to use mameui32 which is fine since that was the program I was using. Then had to figure out how to get it to only show my games. But it's only showing 75 of 100.

Any body know how to add a juke box function? Can I use MP3?

Having trouble with the controls. I can get the joysticks to work but nothing else.

I can use my wireless mouse to enter games using mameui32. Just have no way to escape the game.

I was also successful in changing the bios to boot the computer upon receiving power so yay.

Figured out the juke box but i fid something earlier today thst caused mala to freeze where it wouldnt even let me access the configuration menu so im having to start from scratch.

On layouts....

I would like to use the tron layout (i know im a nerd). But i cant figure out how to install it. I added the iml file to mala and put the font in the font directory but i cant figure out where to put the png file. I put it in standards no luck just a black screen with my games list.

I put it in the mala folder same thing.

With proper ventilation, how long can you safely leave a machine on?

A few Years give or take !! ( some parts will actually last longer being left on all the time vs. turning them off and on several times a day due to the power fluctuations caused by the on/off cycles )

Day-am!!! And thats 24/7???!!!

Was able to install both the fan bar and the coin mech. This fan is super quiet!!! It also has an on/off button which is pretty cool. Prolly gonna try to solder a limiter switch at some point or maybe hook up some kinda thermostat.

Heres a pic of the can with the coin mech installed.

I would like to use an NES emulator with my mala front end. Found one called FCEUX that works well enough but i cant figure out a way to change its orientation so i can play games in the cocktail.

Can any one help with this or reccomend an emulator or app that can do this. Can this be done using mala?

The only I've found to rotate console games is to use a aggregate emulator called Retroarch.

Or just rotate windows.

Or just rotate windows.

This will not work when you are using the Hyperspin front end with Jeepguy's cocktail theme.

The theme requires that windows run un-rotated while the theme itself is pre-rotated.

Sure, you can jump through the hoops of running a script to rotate windows but if you are already running retroarch, it's already built in.
