Pretty sure that is Player 1, Player 2 has buttons 2 and 3 on the same plane.

But try that one two to see which you like best.

Also try just the regular Street Fighter layout, some people don't like the Japanese layouts.

The player 2 does look pretty awesome. So are you supposed to actually slant the joystick with the angle of the box? as in pressing up will be at a bit of an angle instead of directly up towards the screen?

I am going to print a few out to test this week.

No, ignore that, do NOT angle the joystick.

Thanks a lot for all of the help everyone, I really appreciate it especially with the noob questions.

One last thing, Is there a fairly standard distance from the front of the panel that the controls are placed? I notice most are fairly far up from the front but occasionally you see some variance.

Is there a general distance that is usually the most comfortable for most players of various heights?

This is the layout I will be using on my cabinet. I am using this because I am intent on playing MK9 and MKX on my cabinet, which IMO play best with 8 button layouts (always hated the 'press two buttons to throw" crap). Unless you are planning on doing something similar you can stick with the 6 button layout (or the modified 7 button layout for the later MK games with the Run button). I also echo Yots... don't angle the joysticks. It makes playing very difficult.

Don't angle the sticks, but I'm sure you've got the message by now.

Also notice howZexisStryfes cab is completely about fighting games? Makes 8 buttons a tiny bit more palatable but it's still for only a couple games.

Yeah I didnt mention it but those templates I posted I am leaving off the last 2 buttons. The fighting games it will be used for are mostly the older ones that had 6 or less buttons and the consoles will mostly use controllers.

This forum rules, I am way more confident on these controls now. and Slagcoin is the shiznit

So here is what I played around with and feels pretty comfortable. I am thinking of doing a p1coin and p1start on the top left and p2coin and p2start on the right and then in the middle have a pause and exit button. Figure this would work out well? I know its normal to usually have the player start buttons in the middle so I am not too sure.

I kind of like the retrocade's p1 and p2 start buttons in the middle and a few admin buttons on the right top, would that get in the way a lot?

Here is a pic of what I am thinking, the white board is coming down roughly where the glass will sit.

Not trying to go against the more experienced guys advice here... But... 8 buttons are worthwhile ( necessary even ) for PC games like Street Fighter 4 and its variants, the upcoming SF5, and modern MK games even though menu navigation sucks. If those are games you want to play on your cabinet go for 8 per side, if not 6 will cover the arcade games.
If I were building a cabinet with a widescreen LCD, PC based and that much spare room on the CP I would be looking to play SF5 and Ultra SF4 on it. Its a modern design, so make it modern. Just my 2 cents...

Here's a penny back (though in Canada, we don't have pennies anymore).

You don't need 8 buttons for SF4, or SF5.  Buttons 7 and 8 are only used for all 3 Punches and all 3 Kicks, as shortcut buttons.  Most people who are serious about playing SF4, plus people who have played SF from BITD tend to play the regular way without having to rely on those buttons.  It is not necessary to use those buttons for those games.  I would say if you're looking to get into Rising Thunder, Seth Killian's Robot "fighting game for the lame", then you absolutely need those extra 2 for Super and Throw attacks.

For me, the only game I would use as an argument for button 7 and 8 would be for Einhander on PS1. I can't think of any other game that would require those buttons AND still work well on arcade controls.

Little bit of an update

So here is the new control panel layout

I used some adjustable levelling feet

Here is how I decided to lock down the control panel to the cabinet, I used a clasp (not sure the name, the type used on flight cases) on each side that pulls it down tight to the cabinet and then in the spot for a lock I just used a nut and bolt so it cant come undone by accident.

Started the first coat of paint

I need to pick up another can of paint and then I will give it another coat or two yet.
